Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. N.K. Jemisin | N K Jemisin
Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. Oh I have liked everything I have read so far from N. K. Jemisin. This was not as good as broken earth. But extremely solid and I cannot wait to read the next one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It is very interesting reading this, Jemisin‘s debut novel, after reading her Broken Earth trilogy masterpiece(s), because you can see beginnings of her story & style here. It isn‘t as good as Broken Earth - will anything ever be? - but it was an incredibly realized, brutal world that ended in a way that I have absolutely no idea what direction book two will take. And that is very exciting!

I can‘t believe this was Jemisin‘s debut! I can see the early threads of her Broken Earth series in this one — the writing style and the way she weaves different characters and pieces together in a way that gives you a hint of what‘s coming while still leaving space for surprises. Loved this world and the gods and Yeine. I‘m excited to see where she takes this in book 2!

My first book by this author and it was good and different. I've heard her most recent ones are even better. A good book to read during an illness, which I had. Maybe just a bit talky. Quite poetic though and kind of epic.

This was my first Jemisin book. Yup, I can see why she‘s a rising name is sci-fi/fantasy

This was an interesting mythology where gods and mortals interact. The political set up was great, the slow reveal of mysteries kept me intrigued, and the back story of the gods was refreshing.

I did struggle with some of the limitations of the political world and the god‘s powers. That might just be me not being used to fantasy. Overall, an excellent read!

Another excellent book by a genius author. It‘s a fantasy with religion as the guiding story line. It seems to use Hinduism as a source of inspiration. It‘s much easier to understand than some of her later work. It‘s also made for adults and being an adult I like that.

This is just not my thing. I think I lack the abundance of imagination required to really enjoy the fantasy genre. Mostly I was just confused a lot and trying to figure out what god was related to what god and who was trying to kill who. The writing is good, the world building is cool, and I know Jemisin is a groundbreaking author. So for those reasons, I‘m glad I gave this a try.

JGadz11 You put words to exactly how I feel whenever I try fantasy - thank you!🙏🏼 3y
HeatherBookNerd @JGadz11 fantasy is tough for me. But I think the limitations are mine! 3y
JGadz11 @HeatherBookNerd that‘s what drew me, your comment about possibly lacking the imagination to fully appreciate them! I‘ve tried, but always in the back of my mind, I‘m thinking🤔a lot of the time. And your comment about keeping track of characters and relationships is spot on - possibly a side effect of the created worlds in the genre.🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
HeatherBookNerd @JGadz11 there do seem to be some common tropes, rules, common “God behaviors” and such that fantasy folks seem to know, but I am at a loss 😂 3y

2/6: Fantasy #noshamereadathon22

1. High Fantasy: tagged
2. Urban Fantasy: Black Water Sister
3. Sword & Sorcery: Red Sister
4. Grimdark: Gideon the Ninth
5. When We Were Magic

This was the easiest section to fill. I had more than one title on my TBR shelf for each category and very well may change my mind on on any of these depending on my mood and what I feel like reading throughout the year. #NSR22

I love NK Jemisin‘s writing. I listened to this on audio and read some of it in print to make sure I was following along correctly in some areas where I got a little confused. I really enjoyed this. Not as heartbreaking as The Broken Earth Trilogy but still very good!

Looks like I am not going to get a bingo this month, and my doublespin is still on hold at the library 😢 despite all that, I loved my first #bookspinbingo experience. The tagged was excellent (sci-fi, woman warriors, Gods walking among us, deception and a bit of sexiness) I am already looking forward to book 2 of the trilogy in May.

Although I didn‘t enjoy this as much as “The Fifth Season trilogy” or “the city we became” it was still a solid pick. The storyline was quite intriguing, but slowed down towards the end. The huge battle and court politics I expected never really happened (maybe in subsequent books) but I liked the world building. Will continue with the series. #AuthorAMonth

I love Jemisin‘s world building, it is always completely unique from anything else I‘ve ever read. It melds so many genres together: a rich fantasy world, unique religious system, a disturbing murder mystery or two, and deep loving (and love/hate) relationships at the core of turmoil and strife. So much of humanity‘s gifts and downfalls presented in new ways, highlighted in the storytelling that is always lush and visually stunning.

I listened to this #audiobook while cross-stitching, and it really transported me to another world! Having read a few of Jemisin's short stories, this (debut) novel was not what I was expecting. For one, a lot more romance and eroticism than I expected! Lush world building and a fast-paced plot kept me engaged, even though I didn't get very invested in the characters. I'm already onto the second in the trilogy! 4/5 ⭐ #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Eventually things came together and the plot was gripping, original, and well written; i was amazed to learn this was a debut novel.

I‘m happy this was my first book of #2021. Fantasy carried me thru 2020, a real shitty year of pandemics, crises and anxieties. I‘m hoping to find more new worlds and new joys in the works I read this year 💖 #BlackAuthors

Great list of Fantasy- what do you think? There are several I have not read but now want to! The excerpt is from an essay by N K Jamison. The link to that is embedded in the above link. I tagged a couple people I think also love fantasy but I‘m sure I missed a ton.

AllisonM89 I looked through the list. There's a few that i think are missing and a few that i think don't belong, but overall, I'm impressed by the variety of books on the list 4y

I‘m now 41% into my HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS reread, and this narrator‘s great—excellent volume modulation—but I‘ve got a pronunciation question for y‘all. She pronounces courtier all French; core-tee-eh instead of core-tee-er, as we say in Anglo Canada. Is this the common American pronunciation? If so, how have I never heard it before?

Jemisin‘s fantastic story telling, colorfully constructed world and inventive characters come together to create this magnificent story to lose oneself in. As with many books I found the audiobook an additional bonus, adding depth to the already brilliant storytelling. A first in a three part series, this book easily can stands on its own leaving readers fully satisfied. Although, who wouldn‘t want to return to see what else Jemisin has in store.
