Jane of Austin
Jane of Austin: A Novel of Sweet Tea and Sensibility | Hillary Manton Lodge
76 posts | 42 read | 83 to read
In this modern adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, Jane Woodward and her sister Celia run a small tea salon in San Francisco but are forced to relocate to Austin, Texas. While trying to start fresh and settle in, Jane meets a dashing musician, Sean, who steals her heart, but not before catching the eye of another suitor, military veteran Ben Fredrickson. The sisters drift apart, lives collide, dashing men steer Jane off course, and she discovers that adjusting to a new life is trickier than she anticipated.

I enjoyed this retelling of Sense and Sensibility! It‘s a sweet story overall, not just the romance part but also the bond between the sisters. And I really did like that this book is told from the perspectives of Jane (the Marianne character) and Callum (the Colonel Brandon character). Would recommend to Austen fans!

I really enjoyed this Sense and Sensibility retelling set in modern day Austin Texas (where I live). Interesting characters, good pacing, and lots of Austin landmarks-shout out to Torchy‘s Tacos-to smile about. #BookspinBingo

A retelling of Sense and Sensibility, baked goods & the recipes, armchair travel to one of my fave cities—what‘s not to like about this book? If only I had some Torchy‘s to eat while reading. I enjoyed the focus on Jane/Marianne as the MC instead of Celia/Elinor. Loved their younger sister, too. This is a fun, light read with an interesting Colonel Brandon. I was given this book by @Readergrrl in the Christmas swaps—thank you!

Okay it‘s a light pick. I just think it‘s hard to modernize Austen, but this was a great attempt. I did enjoy the story though some parts were a stretch but I can look the other way. #bookpinbingo board is filling out a bit!

Persuasion is my favorite Austen. Is there modern retellings? I‘ve read one and it was okay. “A Recipe for Persuasion”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is a modern retelling of Austen‘s Sense and Sensibility. It takes place in Austin, Texas which I thought was a perfect setting for a modern, American take on this story. Lodge‘s book is from the perspective of Jane (the Marianne character) and Callum (the Col. Brandon character) instead of through the Elinor character like Austen‘s book. I liked this switch. I recommend this, especially to my #pemberlittens

Finishing up this enchanting take on Sense and Sensibility.
Wish Celia (Elinor)was more present though, -no depth, more like a stick person. But then, who can really get Jane Austen right???
The tea shop setting, or looking for the perfect place after moving to Austin,( play on Jane‘s name?), was fascinating and the recipes to die for.
Taken as a whole, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

sprainedbrain I agree with you about needing more of Celia! Even though S&S isn‘t a first person narrative, I always thought of it as a book about Elinor with Marianne in a secondary role, although that may be me identifying with Elinor more. It was odd to have this one told from the Marianne perspective. Lovely photo! 4y
ElizaMarie I am curious if anyone actually tried to make any of the recipes? Also that set up you have there for reading is just great! I love it! 4y

A cute, slightly typical contemporary romance that I bet would be enjoyed by any fan of the genre. The added bonus for me was that it‘s a modern-day retelling of Sense & Sensibility (you may have noticed me talking about that book from time to time lately😂).

It‘s actually really well done! I didn‘t think this Austen story would translate easily to our time, but the author has pulled it off quite nicely. Bonus: recipes!

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

⬇️⬇️⬇️

sprainedbrain Gonna tag my fellow #PemberLittens who have read or were squeezing this in real quick before I lost my library copy. I can‘t wait to hear what you all think! I will mark my next comments as spoilers since I know some are still reading! 😉 @Dcueto @mollyrotondo @Karen3 @quietjenn @JaclynW @janeycanuck @kspenmoll @ElizaMarie 4y
sprainedbrain First... I think I struggled with this book‘s Marianne (Jane) a lot more than I did with Marianne. She drove me a little bit crazy. I was glad to see that they didn‘t try to have Teddy be secretly engaged in this book, because I didn‘t see how that would work in our times. He was just as awkward and bland as Edward, though. I missed the Elinor character a lot, but loved the new Mrs. Jennings and the Palmers. 😂 4y
sprainedbrain Also, I loved the references to Austen sprinkled in. Jane is a tea fantastic, so her sister talks about her obsession with dead leaves, and then the whole wet white shirt reference was just there for Janeites. 😃 I liked Captain Beckett a lot and thought the author handled the whole Willis/Willoughby thing so that it was almost believable. Ha! This book isn‘t my usual genre, but I thought it was a fun retelling. 4y
See All 6 Comments
Karen3 I finished earlier today and I enjoyed it. Some funnies spread throughout and it was entertaining. 4y
ElizaMarie So my problem with the Willis/Willoughby character is I think they went a little too far. I mean how can that be such a coincidence that all these people are interconnected (Austin is a big city) but yeah... I enjoyed it over all too 4y
janeycanuck This was fine. The writing was decent, I liked the switching POV, and the author did a good job of bringing the story into present. Mrs. Jennings was a completely different character, in a good way. But both sisters felt a bit flat to me. I understand Teddy feeling flat because he was hardly present but Celia was wooden and Jane just felt so one-dimensional. It wasn't a waste of time to read but I'm glad I got it from the library. 4y

Over the weekend, I posted some ideas for further Sense & Sensibility reading, and there were several of us planning to read Jane of Austin... I‘m tagging those that I saw, but all are welcome.

Otherwise, you all are of course welcome to plan a less rushed buddy read together!

Another book I didn‘t review though I swear I did.🤷🏻‍♀️I really enjoyed this sweet retelling & modernization of Sense and Sensibility set mostly in Austin, Texas. Jane-the Marianne of the story, was my favorite with her tea brewing & baking, along with Beckett-the Colonel Brandon. The narration was excellent & the author did a good job of updating & changing things just enough to make it fit into modern times + tea-infused recipes are included.

#Pemberlittens @sprainedbrain This modern day adaptation of Sense & Sensibility was charming and fun! I thoroughly enjoyed it and read it in one day. The parallels were great (especially loved the Col Brandon character) and there were some awesome nods to the original, like the pictured quote. In this case, the leaves are referring to tea leaves, since tea is the sisters‘ business! I thought the writing was great and would read this author again.

I bought my grandma a copy for her 83rd birthday last week! 🎁

It‘s a sweet retelling of Sense and Sensibility set in Austin, TX. The heroine, Jane, is the middle sister. I loved the Torchy‘s Tacos references since I just ate at Torchy‘s for the first time last year! 🌮 And the language/plot lines are fully grandma-friendly. 😉

It wasn‘t super original; but it obviously wasn‘t meant to be. So 3.5 stars overall. #howjessreadsin2019

Enjoying this on audio! It‘s a lighthearted retelling of Sense and Sensibility, set in Texas; and told from the middle sister‘s point of view. 🙂

Sense & Sensibility set in modern day Austin, Texas told from the perspectives of Jane (Marianne reimagined as a prickly tea-shop owner) and Captain Callum Beckett (Colonel Brandon reimagined as a retired and wounded Marine). Fun #romantsy, and really enjoyable.

Perfect patio-read...a cute adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, but from the dual perspectives of the Marianne and Colonel Brandon stand-ins, Jane and Callum. It doesn't hurt that periodically, recipes are included for some of the food and drink that are included in the world of this tea-shop/bakery owner. Thanks again @Ddzmini !
