🤣😭 My best score remains in the 1700s. But this is the best I've scored in a bit.

🩵 The Summer Book is an all-time fave. I'm starting a re-read at a Midsummer Festival this weekend.
🩵 In Watermelon Sugar is probably the most obscure book I've read from these lists so far.
🩵 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is the only book that I was supposed to read for school, but didn't. 🤭🤫

We're on to list 7, STILL from the 1900s! I'm getting worse, not better! 😅

dabbe I've debated as to whether or not I should ditch this list because it is so DEPRESSING for quite a few of us; on the other hand, I'm not a quitter. I think we have about 3 lists to go, so I'll see 'er through to the end. I'm not tagging anyone because I don't want to torture anybody intentionally, and I don't want anyone to feel bad! To make everyone feel better, my score this week was the LOWEST ever, a whopping 5. 🤣😭🤣 #playatyourownrisk 21h
CogsOfEncouragement I came in at 6 because I counted The Summer Book by Tove Jansson which I am currently reading. Also: Hitchhiker‘s Guide, Slaughterhouse-Five, Play It as It Lays, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and The Bluest Eye. (edited) 20h

Bookwormjillk I thought I would get better at these but only 7 🤦‍♀️ 1w
shortsarahrose 5 - pretty good considering the only “required reading” book for school on the list was To Kill a Mockingbird. Several others on the list are on my TBR but I haven‘t gotten to them yet. 1w
Amor4Libros 1! 😂 100 Years of Solitude 1w

rwmg Marginally better than last week with 16 (17 if you count 100 Years of Solitude, which I have DNF-d twice). If it hadn't been for my teenage hormones looking for rude bits, I would probably have DNF-d The Naked Lunch as well. 7d

1. 1984 - I read this book in high school. I didn‘t really like it.
2. The Catcher In The Rye - This book was okay but I didn‘t really care for it.
3. Lord Of The Flies - I didn‘t like this book when I read it.
4. The Lord Of The Rings - I really enjoyed reading the books and watching the movies. I read the books first and then watched the movies. I liked The Hobbit too. The best part is that it‘s a finished book series.

#threelistthursday

melissajayne I read Lord of the Flies 10 years apart and both times I didn‘t like it 2w

Abysmal. Hemingway and high school assignments were four of the five. Lord of the Flies is disturbing, but is one of my favorites from this list. (So disturbing). Fun fact - I have been grumbling at most of these lists because The Quiet American is the only Graham Greene they usually list and it isn‘t the one I‘ve read. Only, I just checked The StoryGraph and apparently I read it in 2021 and just didn‘t like it. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 #tlt #threelistthursday

dabbe That is hysterical! And I'll be happy when we're done with this list. I need to find lists that better support what we love to read. I still can't believe I didn't even recognize 72 of these! 🤣 #abysmalindeedy Thanks for playing and sharing. 💙📚💚 2w

I own an edition of this book and have used it as a checklist for more than a decade and i still didn't recognize all the books on the list. 😂

It's not necessarily we're not “well-read“ but rather a specific effort was made to create an international list so, for example, it includes classics from Scandinavian countries that are not well-known elsewhere.

Three books I don't remember reading:
The Roots of Heaven
The Guiltless
Death Sentence

kspenmoll Wowza!!!! 2w
RaeLovesToRead 90?! 🤯🤯🤯 Even with the book as a guide, that is really impressive!!! 2w

BarbaraBB I read 58! Not bad but you‘re so far ahead of me 😀 2w
Liz_M @BarbaraBB The quiz stats are a little wonky -- both TheBookHippie & I are ranked #1 Also, how can it rank a person as #1 and then say 5% of users did better?!?? 🙃

58 is a lot! You read so much more than me and read way more TOB and prize-list books than me. 🌟
2w
Liz_M @TheBookHippie I've read about 980 books (sometimes I count half-completed books, sometimes I don't) from the 1318 books in all the various editions of this list. . 2w

I S.U.C.K.! For the first time, I actually counted how many books I actually recognized: only 28/100! That means I have never even heard of 72 of them! 😱 Of the nine I actually read, here are three faves:
1. THE LONG GOOD-BYE: love Philip Marlowe and Chandler.
2. THE GO-BETWEEN: beautifully written, reminded me of ATONEMENT (though this one came first).
3. THE LORD OF THE RINGS. #ofcourse

peaKnit I‘ve heard of 14! Read 6…oof. lol 2w
ChaoticMissAdventures I don't think it is you. We are all big readers and many of us are in the book world. I think a lot of these if we looked are not even being published any longer and so by default did not hold up across generations 2w
RaeLovesToRead I love how these lists are so obscure we are now doing marks for recognised haha 2w

RaeLovesToRead RIGHT. I'M GOING IN. (Wish me luck...) 2w
RaeLovesToRead I've read 8. But I maintain that quite a lot of the books on this list are made up and don't actually exist. 2w
kspenmoll I have only read 9. Favs: Excellent Woman, Barbara Pym, The quiet American, Graham Greene, If This pis a Man, Primo Levi 2w
dabbe @peaKnit Right there with ya! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing. 💙📚💚 2w
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures I also think it's because a lot of them are from all over the world, and at least in my case, I pretty much read American/Brit lit. It's rather challenging to find decent translations as well. 2w

shortsarahrose Read 6, have seen the movie for two others I haven‘t read (Zorba the Greek and Doctor Zhivago). I actually feel like I had heard of a decent amount and read more than previous lists, but I think we‘re in a time period that I know more about. LOTR is the favorite I‘ve read, though 1984 was also good. 2w

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I've read 7 of these. Favorites were LOTR, Bonjour Tristesse (more for the sense of place than story) , & Giovanni's Room. I've slowly been working through the short stories that comprise The Burning Plain, but it's not included in the total read. I disliked Zorba the Greek. I've heard of 41 of these, though I'd be hard pressed to tell you what they are about. I might explore some of these lists & add some to my TBR. It is a diverse list. 2w
dabbe @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Boy is it! You've given me more for the TBR, too. Thanks for playing and sharing. 💙📚💚 2w

10/100 Faves in photo. All Quiet on the Western Front is one of the few books assigned in 9th grade that I managed to finish. Rereading Their Eyes Were Watching God taught me that no one reads the same book twice. Our life experiences rewrites how we respond to the text. A Farewell to Arms started my obsession with Hemingway, and it also sparked a running joke Junior year of high school about being blown up while eating cheese. Kids…🤣🤣 #tlt

DGRachel Seriously. My boyfriend at the time even wrote about it in my yearbook and it‘s about the only thing I remember from it. Also, a little peeved that the Faulkner, Greene, and Orwell‘s were not the ones I‘ve read by those authors and I didn‘t count the DNF for Tropic of Cancer, but I didn‘t count the DNF for The Hobbit. I‘ve tried to read it at least 4 times and never made it more than 100 pages. I hate that book. 🤣🤣🤣 3w
dabbe Thanks for sharing all of these! I sometimes wonder where we'd be without our assigned high school reading--for good and bad! 🤣 Thanks for playing and sharing! 🤗 3w
DGRachel @dabbe Forgot the image! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
DGRachel @dabbe without assigned reading, I‘d have had a higher GPA Freshman year. 🤣🤣 (the assigned books were mostly 🤢). I do hope that prior to the current administration, assigned reading was becoming more diverse. Zora was one of the few non-“dead white man” authors we had to read and I think we only read her because she was considered local. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3w
dabbe @DGRachel There's still many “dead white men“ books on our district's list, but we have thankfully become more diversified over the years. There's still hope! 😍 3w

There is no in between in this survey, I had either never heard of the book or I had read the book and a lot of the ones I did read I didn‘t like. My collection of 1001 Books to Read Before You Die is very different. It was nice to see E M Forster, Evelyn Waugh, James Joyce, and Virginia Wolfe. Special shout out to The Charwoman‘s Daughter for making the list.

This is too funny. I thought that the 1700s would be my worst showing, and my scores would improve by the 1900s. But the 1700s were my best score, and they've gotten progressively worse. If I'm 100% honest, I don't know about some of these titles. 🫠 My only thought besides shame after this quiz is that I would like to read more Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf. 😉😏😂
#tlt #threelistthursday @dabbe

ChaoticMissAdventures I want to read more Edith too! It's so interesting that the books of the 1900s have been a struggle for most of us. I wonder why that is. I really expect to see more Fitzgerald and Agatha Christie. 1mo
dabbe @lil1inblue @ChaoticMissAdventures Oh, we are FAR from finished with the 1900s ... many more still to come. And my best score was in the 1700s, too! 🤣 #TFPAS (Thanks for playing and sharing) 😊 1mo

Not great especially since 6 of them are DNF‘s.

I have the 2006 version of the book and have read/dnf‘d 24. In my version, and not on the survey, are Persuasion, Northanger Abbey, A Christmas Carol, Alice‘s Adventures in Wonderland, Little Women, War and Peace, Anna Karenina and Tess of the D‘Urbervilles. It‘s hard to imagine that these didn‘t make the list.

Classics are hit or miss for me but have added some to Mt TBR

💚 I was one of the only people in my class who loved Candide when we read it in high school. This still baffles me.

I completed 45 books from the #1001books list this year for an updated total of 253 out of 1,318!

A few were rereads but from long enough ago that I didn‘t have dates in Goodreads. As usual, there were books I just pushed through to finish as well as fantastic reads.

Several were read for the #Reading1001 group, including 13 for #TBRTakedown. Many others were read with or for various readalong groups and challenges listed in the comments.

I‘m compiling my reading statistics for this year, which also includes updating the tabs in my copy of this book. Whenever I look at the list and think it‘s never ending, this print copy helps me realize I am making progress. It also makes me wish for an edition with all 1,300+ books on the list because I sometimes have to add tabs for a book that has been removed or added in a newer edition.

Have just spent the last hour or so logging on Goodreads which of these books I've read so far... turns out I've managed 53 / 1001 (which isn't too bad to say I'm 33 and only started reading seriously about a decade ago!)

I feel inspired to write my own book of book lists... I own and ❤ so many of them (several are in storage) and this one has some dodgy choices for the 2000s 😅

I may try to recruit some Litsy help when I start the project!

I also created a "Must Reads" list for this year, and it's been fun trying to get through it. https://www.listchallenges.com/profile/416994/published-lists 4y
Daisey You can also follow #1001books here for posts about books on the list. 4y
RaeLovesToRead @aperfectmjk Was it the Ultimate Must Reads?? I got about 113 if it was ? Not bad, but below average apparently!!! Once I get going on these list sites I'll be there all night going "just one more list... just one more!!!" I love lists ?? 4y
RaeLovesToRead @Daisey Thanks 😁... I will absolutely be using the hashtag from now on and prioritise the books! There are so many on the list I've never heard of! 4y
aperfectmjk @RaeLovesToRead girl... sometimes I'll just scroll through those lists before bed and I get sucked in like a vortex. It definitely makes me want to read more and more. 4y
RaeLovesToRead @aperfectmjk Haha yeah, I totally get that 😅😊 I spend almost as much time scrolling as reading!! 4y
BarbaraBB There is also a reading group of the #1001books on LibraryThing if you‘re interested! https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/452/1001-Books-to-read-before-you-die 4y
RaeLovesToRead @BarbaraBB Awesome! I've not come across LibraryThing before - will check it out 😊 4y

2020 hasn‘t been the best year for reading books of the list of #1001books to read before you die.
I did finish Proust though and fell in love with Americanah.
With 23 books this year my total now equals 637 out of 1001.

Crazeedi That is amazing and well done. I'm very impressed! 4y
BarbaraBB Thank you @Crazeedi ❤️ and a happy new year! 4y
Crazeedi @BarbaraBB happy new year to you too🎉🍾 4y

Amiable Slow and steady wins the race! Great progress! 4y
emilyhaldi Gosh so much praise for Americanah... I think that needs to be on my priority list for 2021! 4y
TrishB Well done 👍🏻 4y
BarbaraBB @emilyhaldi I really loved it. It is such an easy read but there is very much said en happening between the lines. You‘d certainly love it too! 🤍 4y
rachaich Americanah was wonderful 😺 4y
Megabooks Awesome!! 👏🏻👏🏻 4y
Leftcoastzen Wow, that‘s great! 4y

I read 30 more books from the #1001books list this year, plus 3 rereads of Austen novels that I did not count. This is just under my goal to average 3 per month but exactly the same number as last year. I read my #Reading1001 group #TBRTakedown book for every month of the year although not always within the month. Some of these also worked for #ReadingEurope2020, and I enjoyed reading Moby Dick with #LitsyBookClub.

Daisey @Elo_isa @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @mariaku21 Thank you! They did make for an interesting reading year. 4y
BarbaraBB Great year! I saw your Europe post earlier and thought ‘wow so many #1001books‘ but I see now that‘s no coincidence! I have yet to make my 1001 stats but have read less than you this year. 4y
Daisey @BarbaraBB Thanks! Yes, pretty much all of the planned Europe books were chosen from the #1001books list and most of the others were just lucky additions. (edited) 4y

Today I got a new iPhone and my other favorite app, 1001 books, is no longer supported by Apple. So now I no longer know if I‘m on track in finishing those 1001 books before I die 😢🤷🏻‍♀️
I loved that feature and keeping track of the books I read. Now it‘s back to the spreadsheet I guess.

ValerieAndBooks What 😣 ?! My 1001Books app still works with my iPhone 11. What iPhone did you get? 5y
DrexEdit 😨 I didn't know there was such an app! 5y
DAB 😱 5y

MicheleinPhilly Oh no! I have an app that is also no longer supported because they went out of business BUT it was an app I used to purchase music directly from artists so all of the music I purchased was lost. 😕 5y
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks I have an 11 too, but it happens when you get a new phone and try to sync your apps on it. Arukiyomi (from LT, who built the app) already announced it on Facebook. 5y
BarbaraBB @DrexEdit It was a great app... 5y
BarbaraBB @MicheleinPhilly That really sucks too 😫 5y
Ruthiella How frustrating!!! 😩 5y
LeahBergen Oh no!! 5y
Megabooks Boo!! 5y
ValerieAndBooks So the app developer doesn‘t ever plan to update it? Too bad if so, as we paid good money for this app 😕 5y
CarolynM That's the downside of having everything at our fingertips - we don't really own any of it, it can all just disappear or become inaccessible. 5y
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks He had to pay a lot and had no funds for the update I think. I know he started a crowdfunding campaign but without results. But you‘re right, it was an expensive buy in the first place. 5y
BarbaraBB @CarolynM Exactly, it‘s weird how you never much think about it unless that happens. 5y
ValerieAndBooks That‘s too bad about him not having enough funds 😢. I wonder if he tried reaching out to the book publisher for potential collaboration. But now I won‘t have to be reminded constantly of how long I‘ll be expected to live 😂. I need to search for that spreadsheet again so I‘ll be ready when I can‘t access the app anymore. 5y
BarbaraBB @ValerieAndBooks I remember that Boxall didn‘t support the app, even tried to prevent it, if I am right. So no financial support there. And you‘re right, the positive thing is not being confronted with my mortality every so often 😉 5y
ValerieAndBooks Hmm, maybe Boxall was afraid that the app would lessen the sales of the his books 🤷🏻‍♀️. 5y
vivastory That's a shame. I had thought about getting an iPhone so I could access this app. 5y

Thank you for the tag @NeedsMoreBooks Question 1: when I learned to read when I was around 4 years. Question 2: impossible to answer because not every book is good for every person, though I could come up with a list of a hundred or so I would feel good about recommending 😊. Tagging @LeahBergen #Two4Tuesday

NeedsMoreBooks Thank you for playing! 5y
TheSpineView Thanks for playing! 🤩 5y
