The Wind Through the Keyhole
The Wind Through the Keyhole: A Dark Tower Novel | Stephen King
In The Wind Through the Keyhole, Stephen King returns to the rich landscape of Mid-World, the spectacular territory of the Dark Tower fantasy saga that stands as his most beguiling achievement. Roland Deschain and his ka-tetJake, Susannah, Eddie, and Oy, the billy-bumblerencounter a ferocious storm just after crossing the River Whye on their way to the Outer Baronies. As they shelter from the howling gale, Roland tells his friends not just one strange story but two . . . and in so doing, casts new light on his own troubled past. In his early days as a gunslinger, in the guilt-ridden year following his mothers death, Roland is sent by his father to investigate evidence of a murderous shape-shifter, a skin-man preying upon the population around Debaria. Roland takes charge of Bill Streeter, the brave but terrified boy who is the sole surviving witness to the beasts most recent slaughter. Only a teenager himself, Roland calms the boy and prepares him for the following days trials by reciting a story from the Magic Tales of the Eld that his mother often read to him at bedtime. A persons never too old for stories, Roland says to Bill. Man and boy, girl and woman, never too old. We live for them. And indeed, the tale that Roland unfolds, the legend of Tim Stoutheart, is a timeless treasure for all ages, a story that lives for us. King began the Dark Tower series in 1974; it gained momentum in the 1980s; and he brought it to a thrilling conclusion when the last three novels were published in 2003 and 2004. The Wind Through the Keyhole is sure to fascinate avid fans of the Dark Tower epic. But this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an enchanting and haunting journey to Rolands world and testimony to the power of Stephen Kings storytelling magic.

What an amazing read! I read out of order(which is okay) and definitely shed tears at the end! I have been through so much with Roland and his tet, it‘s a sad day that it‘s finally come to an end. I recommend reading all of the books in order starting NOW. You won‘t regret it!

A brief return to Roland‘s world this book fits between books 4&5 the central story involves a young Roland chasing a skin shifter in Midworld.

This can be read alone or as part of the dark tower series although it doesn‘t really add to that story.

Look! A book related post! It‘s an April miracle! 😂 The Book Rack called to say two books I wanted had been turned in. I made a stop during my other shopping errands. I do love a good used bookstore #bookhaul. #Bailey is not pleased that I left, even though I brought her toys and treats. 😂 #DogsofLitsy

“Stories take a person away. If it‘s a good one, that is.”

This is a story within a story set inside the Dark Tower universe but luckily it was pretty standalone since it‘s been so long since I read that series.

I liked the story and really liked the story within the story. Glad I finally got around to reading this one.

PenguinInFlight I loved this book SO MUCH! I really tried to love The Dark Tower series, and I‘m going to try it again some day, but I had a hard time with it. I was also buddy reading it and everyone had read it before and it was hard for me too keep up with all the subtle things they picked up. This book, though, I thought was absolute perfection. 😍🙌🏻 2y
whippoorwill815 @PenguinInFlight I remember liking the series but oh man I read it SO LONG ago. Like high school long ago (so....15 years???). I‘m a huge Stephen King fan but I have many novels I prefer over the Dark Tower. I vaguely remember Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla being my favorites in the series. I had just picked up The Wind Through the Keyhole from my shelf and was ashamed I hadn‘t read it yet!! 2y
PenguinInFlight @nestlera I‘m a huge King fan, so it made me a bit sad I didn‘t love them more. I thought for sure I was going to jump on the bandwagon. I‘m going to try again, maybe this summer, and see if I enjoy them more. I did love Wizard and Glass - that one stood out for sure. 2y

Roland and the ka-tet have escaped an Oz-like city only to be hit with a wild storm. As they wait out the storm, Roland tells them a story of his youth and in it is a story from his childhood. He and Jamie go to investigate killings by a skin-man(a shape shifter) in an outlying town. As they track him, Roland helps a survivor, a boy a few years younger than he is. He tells him a tale of the origin of Tim Stoutheart, a famous gunslinger.

A short but enjoyable detour in the Dark Tower quest, as Roland and co take a break to ride out a storm and Roland tells them another story (with an even bette story within that story).

I forgot about this book when I was listening to the Dark Tower series -- not because it's not good, but because it was published much later than the final book. Chronologically, it falls between 4 and 5, but it can be read as a stand-alone novel. Because nothing happens that has an impact on the story, it's also fine to read it out of order. King, himself, narrates, and he does a fine job.

Great story! It doesn't advance the Dark Tower plot any further on the graph, but it's a ripping good tale for all that. A story within a story within a story--Uncle Stevie telling the story of Roland Deschain, gunslinger, telling the story of himself as a youth telling the story of young Tim Stoutheart. I found it much more engaging than Wizard and Glass.

First Dark Tower book of the summer! I'm gearing up for the movie.
#darktower

KathyWheeler This is the only one I haven't reread in preparation for the movie. I need to read it this weekend. 3y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @KathyWheeler I haven't finished the series yet (which makes ME the "stupid" kind of weird!) and this one technically comes after book 4, so I'm reading it now. I'm spacing them out so they don't all run together, but I need to pick up the pace! 3y
KathyWheeler @CindyMyLifeIsLit Because it was originally published after the series had wrapped up and I originally read it last, I forgot it really comes after book 4, so in my rereading, I forgot to include it in its proper order. 3y

Roland: I'm not much of a storyteller.

(Also Roland: tells days worth of stories.)

This went off in a few different directions but in the end all the stories were wrapped up nicely. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

*This is narrated by Stephen King. I missed Frank Muller's narration. SK isn't bad just different.

sprainedbrain I've been debating listening to SK read it, or reading on my kindle. I really love Frank Muller's narration on the other books! 3y

Goodreads has this listed as book 4.5 of the Dark Tower series, OverDrive has it as book 8. I've read some comments that state this as a stand alone book and others recommending it be read at the end of the series. Did you read it as part of the series or ?? 🤔

TrishB It came out as number 8 but it is 4.5 in time order! You can read at either point as it is stand alone, if I was starting them now though I'd read at 4.5! 3y
TheNextBook I've read it at the end of the series and between books 4 & 5. I would tell you to read between 4 & 5, if you're reading the series. There is no reason to wait for the end of the book... 3y

My most recently read Stephen King book is The wind through the keyhole. While it happens in the Dark Tower universe it actually stands alone quite well. No need to read the others for this one to make sense. I enjoyed the story quite a bit. (Actually it is a 2 in 1 deal.) It is read by the author who is no Guidall but it is fun to hear how King pronounces his character's names and the places.
