A Calamity of Souls | David Baldacci

I wasn‘t going to nominate anything but Audible is featuring the new David Baldacci book, A Calamity of Souls, and I would like to nominate it for #CampLitsy24. I haven‘t ever read any of his work but the description sounds intriguing.

squirrelbrain Thanks! We‘ll add it to the list. 1d

I‘ve been using Libby to borrow audiobooks from my local library. Someone on here mentioned that they use Hoopla to borrow from their local library so I thought I‘d check it out. If both apps are using the same source library, why don‘t they carry the same books? My library is closed for a couple of weeks for some maintenance, or I‘d call them. Is anyone able to enlighten me?

Librarybelle Ebooks and eaudiobooks in libraries are complicated…very, very complicated. Depending upon the platform and the library budget, eaudiobooks may not be offered by the same library in Libby and Hoopla. The buying models are different on each platform, but essentially the library, per publishing guidelines, buys or rents one copy per title, much like a physical item. If the library wants multiple copies of the same title, they have to buy more, ⬇️ 7d
Librarybelle ⬆️ like physical books. It‘s not a blanket license for purchasing e-products. And, the costs per copy are extreme, again based on publishers. Some publishers also have a checkout limit or a purchase length of time on the item, meaning that after a certain amount of checkouts or after “owning” the copy for a certain amount of years, if the library wants a copy to stay on their platform, they have to repurchase it. Hoopla‘s model is different too ⬇️ 7d
See All 9 Comments
Librarybelle ⬆️ in that the library essentially rents the title and pays for how many times a patron checks it out. That‘s a really, really basic way of explaining that. It‘s more complicated than that, but it‘s at least basic. Hope this helps! Most library users have no idea how ebooks and eaudiobooks are so much more than consumers pay or have restrictions placed on them by publishers. An ebook copy of a James Patterson is over 80.00 per copy for libraries. 7d
Librarybelle Sorry - I worked with educating the public and staff for years when I worked in a library. Call it a passion statement. Stepping down from my soapbox now! 😂 7d
CatLass007 @Librarybelle No need to apologize. I had no idea how things worked. Call me educated. 7d
IndoorDame I was confused by this when I started using Hoopla too. Someone explained to me that your source library chooses which individual licenses to buy each year for their own catalog and distribute through an app like Libby, but Hoopla is more like a second source library that your library can subscribe to at different tiers which decide how much access it‘s patrons will have to Hoopla‘s materials, but not actually which materials. 7d
CatLass007 @IndoorDame Thank you! 7d
Suet624 Great explanations! Thank you. 7d

Cupcake12 What exactly is a silent book club? Thanks for joining in x 1w
CatLass007 @Cupcake12 I‘ve been seeing articles about them recently and when I found out that one meets at a nearby coffeehouse, I thought I‘d check it out. The way it‘s described is that the first 30 minutes are spent chatting and getting settled in and ordering food and/or drinks. The next hour is spent silently reading whatever we choose to bring with us. The final 30 minutes are spent chatting about what was read and anything else that strikes our fa. 1w

#NancyDrew #NancyDrewBR As I was unpacking a box of old books I found four old Nancy Drew books. The copyright is 1959 but I have no idea when these were released. My parents gave them to me as a Christmas gift in the early 1970s. My brother suggested that I try to sell them on eBay in stead of donating them to the Humane Society‘s thrift store. If anyone sells them on eBay it will be my brother. Does anyone know if they have any financial value?

#ReadAway2024 When I first started this book, I found the teenage characters annoying. But they were just behaving like teenagers and by the end of this very enjoyable book Felix and his friends had grown up more than just a little. Felix is a 17-year-old trans boy who knows he‘s not a girl but is not quite sure he‘s a boy. As he questions his gender identity, an even bigger question becomes apparent: does he deserve to be loved? It‘s a (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 sad question for anyone to ask and we probably all feel this way from time to time. But Felix seems to believe that, for whatever reason, the answer to the question is, “No.” He spends a lot of mental energy questioning if he deserves anything good at all. But during the course of the book he learns to not take responsibility for everything painful that happens to others or is inflicted on him by others. It reminded me of what it was like (cont)⬇️ 3w

#ReadAway2024 Based on a true story, this was a wonderful book. It takes place in London during WWII when thousands of people who lost their homes to the Blitz lived in an unfinished Tube station. In Bethnal Green the library was destroyed on the first night of the Blitz and the Head Librarian is killed. Clara is the head of the library built in the Tube station. In spite of the sad things that happened, some things are happy. The author (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 interviewed 100 librarians in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1922 opening of the Bethnal Green Library. The quotes from these librarians that open each chapter are bittersweet to me. In England there is a statute that requires free libraries to be opened. The love of reading and respect for librarians doesn‘t seem to exist in the US anymore, if it ever did. There were many characters and the resolutions of their stories may (cont)⬇️ 3w

I am in Audible time-out. I didn‘t know there was such a thing until this morning. I‘m not allowed to return anything for six months. I‘ve been participating in multiple buddy reads. Sometimes what I buy is not enjoyable to me. #HailTheBail I guess that, starting today, any books I don‘t like will have to wait for six months before I can return them. CatLass007 because I‘m focusing on audiobooks that I check out via Libby, books that already are in my Audible library, or print books that I already own. #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 There is a different, newer cover on the audiobook, but I like this cover so much more. This is the tenth entry in the Mrs. Murphy Mystery series. Just because the animals talk doesn‘t make this a cozy mystery. Both humans and animals cuss. But all the violence takes place “offstage” and there‘s no graphic sex.

#SundayBuddyRead #ReadAway2024 This was a lovely book and I look forward to tomorrow‘s discussion of the final section. I don‘t remember who said it was YA, but it didn‘t feel like YA to me. It feels like a tale of family and friendship. It‘s a coming of age tale. Yes, there‘s teenage angst but it feels more mature than YA. I‘m not sure if I‘m making any sense. One day during the week I read an article about the new Broadway musical The (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Outsiders, based on the novel by S.E. Hinton. The author of the article called The Outsiders a YA novel. But it doesn‘t feel like YA anymore than West Side Story feels like YA. 2mo

willaful YA can be mature and about things other than teenage angst! There's lots of wonderful coming-of-age YA. 2mo
CatLass007 @willaful I guess I‘m kind of a book snob.😁 2mo

In Maryland, concurrent bills have been introduced, the “Freedom to Read” Act. The bill would protect library workers and library material from discrimination and removal. Next door, in my home state of West Virginia the House passed a bill allowing the prosecution of librarians. WTF??!?? I don‘t live in West Virginia anymore, I live in the very red state of Tennessee. So what‘s next for this country?

Sarahreadstoomuch It just gets more terrifying every day to be a librarian. 2mo
CatLass007 @Sarahreadstoomuch Are you a librarian? In which state do you live? 📚♥️📚 2mo
Sarahreadstoomuch @CatLass007 I live in NH, but am the Assistant Director of a public library in MA. So, safer in a Blue State than my colleagues in other parts of the country, in a sense, but not immune. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
CatLass007 @sarahreadstoomuch No, not immune, fewer nut jobs in a blue state, but they‘re still around. The county in which I live is the only county in North East Tennessee that voted for Obama twice, Hilary once and for Biden once (so far). There‘s a fairly good sized university here, so our little blue county is surrounded. I think the Knoxville area went blue because that‘s where UT is located. I visited my oldest nephew last week and his house (cont) ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @Sarahreadstoomuch has a black flag waving proudly in front. When you look closely, you can tell it‘s actually an inverted American flag. He was raised by my brother‘s first wife and her second husband so his beliefs are influenced by them. It‘s sad and it‘s scary but I can‘t believe I‘m related to someone who has such fascist beliefs. I already have divested myself from a radical cousin. And you know? It‘s not about politics at all, (cont) ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
CatLass007 @Sarahreadstoomuch It‘s about wondering what fascists are capable of. What kind of person doesn‘t respect the beliefs of others? What kind of person believes that people who look different, who sound different, or think differently should be treated so hatefully and violently? 2mo

#LiteraryCrew This is a pick but that‘s partially my way of justifying the Audible credit spent and the time I spent listening to this. The writing, the language, is beautiful! I think the storytelling is a bit weak, with lots of peaks and valleys. This is not her first published book but this was the first released in the US.

Librarybelle Great review! 2mo
tpixie Oh! You finished it!! I saw your earlier post you were struggling. I‘m struggling also. I started three times today. I think I finally made it to chapter 1. 2mo

CatLass007 @tpixie I finished it, but I had to push myself to do so. If you‘ve had to start it three times today, it sounds like you‘re struggling even more than I did. 2mo
tpixie @CatLass007 💚 I couldn‘t stay focused. I probably need to read the book at the same time as listening to the audio. But oh well 💚 2mo

#SheSaid I‘m listening to the section we will be discussing tomorrow and took a news break. I wasn‘t looking for anything in particular, I just wanted to scroll through the news. This article about Fani Willis reminded me of what Anita Hill was put through during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings. https://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/wireStory/fani-willis-testimony-evokes-long-standi...

CatLass007 Have we as a nation made any progress in all this time? 2mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa No, it sadly hasn‘t. I watched part of it on CourtTV and found myself thinking she was prosecuting and being persecuted for a consensual adult relationship…while the man her real legal case is against has had multiple illegal adult relationships including rape & slandering the survivor to porn stars AND playboy bunnies and paying them off to keep it quiet while he was married. But hey, he‘s a rich white guy so everyone goes 🤷‍♀️, but a lady ⤵️ 2mo

#LiteraryCrew I‘m trying to listen to this as an audiobook. But I‘ve fallen asleep twice. I‘ve finally finished chapter 2. Is anyone else having trouble with this?

Librarybelle It‘s a slow burn novel, so I think it is a bit slow in the beginning. I read it a few years ago and have started my reread of it yet for #LiteraryCrew , but I do remember it being a slow start. 2mo
CatLass007 @Librarybelle Thanks for your insight. I think I just need to make sure I‘m sitting up instead of lying down while I listen.😅 2mo
rubyslippersreads I actually think it might be helping that I watched the TV series first. 2mo

CatLass007 @Librarybelle @rubyslippersreads I‘m starting to get to know the characters now, which always makes a huge difference to me. 2mo
willaful I think I DNF'd the audio. Going to try in print this time. 2mo
CatLass007 @Librarybelle @rubyslippersreads @willaful Aaand I nodded off again. But it‘s on me because I decided to curl up under the covers with the kitties. I clearly told myself to sit in the chair, but I was disobedient. 2mo
Crazeedi This was a challenge to read, but it comes together. This authors style takes getting used to 2mo
Crazeedi Plus I can't do audio if I'm not moving or busy, I fall asleep every time! Lol 2mo
rubyslippersreads @CatLass007 @Librarybelle Curling up with sleeping kitties is guaranteed to put me right to sleep. 😹 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Crazeedi Me too. In fact, I often use audiobooks to help me sleep. 2mo
CatLass007 There‘s an audiobook called The Weirdies by Michael Buckley and it‘s narrated by Kate Winslet. I play it when I‘m having difficulty falling asleep. I‘ve never heard it all the way through. 2mo
CatLass007 @rubyslippersreads @Crazeedi @Librarybelle @willaful Welp, I have listened to approximately 25% of this book, so I‘m going to keep plugging along. I‘m sitting in my lounge chair with a kitty on my lap. I won‘t be falling asleep here. (edited) 2mo

The Sign of Four | Arthur Conan Doyle

#NoPlaceLikeHolmes #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I came across the word chaplet in chapter 4 of the tagged book. I had heard the word before from Mom and a friend of hers referring to the Divine Chaplet of Mercy. But I‘ve never heard it in any other context. I think definition 2 is the meaning intended by Conan Doyle, a necklace.

CBee Thanks for sharing 😊 2mo

CatLass007 @CBee Last year I was talking to a friend about the hundreds of books I still have boxed up after a move. He advised me to deaccession. I googled it while we were talking. He couldn‘t believe I‘d never heard the word before. I can‘t believe he‘s the only person I know who has heard the word before. 2mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR #ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 I still like the character of Eve Dallas and I find her relationship with Roarke a bit more believable in this book than in the first one. If I were casting the movie or TV show, I know who I‘d cast as Roarke. The actor‘s name is Franc Luz and I saw him as the detective on Broadway in City of Angels. Good show. Other roles I‘ve seen him in are as Jonny Depp‘s father in Don Juan (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 DeMarco and as Odan in the ST:TNG episode The Host. It‘s his height and his hair that have me leaning in his direction. And the singing. I‘m working on my fantasy cast for the rest of the characters but this will do for now. And this role can be re-cast if anyone better comes along… and I‘m thinking. 2mo
CatLass007 Maybe Michael T. Weiss from The Pretender? 2mo
CatLass007 I‘m looking forward to our discussions on 2/15 and 2/29. ETA: In the first book, the fact that Roarke‘s butler treated Eve so rudely and Roarke allowed it pissed me off. In this book Roarke still allows the butler to be rude to Eve, but now I wonder if they don‘t have some sort of history. The thought crossed my mind reading the first book and in this book I‘m leaning even more in that direction. (edited) 2mo

LiseWorks The guy that has to play Roarke has to be Irish. Lol The guy you mentioned sounds Spanish or Italian. I have no cluenwhonthe actor is but he has to have an Irish lilt in speaking. 2mo
CatLass007 @LiseWorks Actually he‘s American, as I imagine most of the cast will be, since it takes place in the NYC of the future. James Doohan was Canadian and he had a marvelous Scottish brogue in the original Star Trek. But this is just a fantasy movie. I‘m thinking Michael Clarke Duncan would be great as the new chief of police. The character is supposed to be 6‘6” and 301 lbs, since he played an equally huge character (cont)⬇️ 2mo
CatLass007 @LiseWorks in The Green Mile. I know he‘s passed away, but I‘m casting this movie in my mind, not in reality. 2mo
TheSpineView Excellent! 2mo
Ddzmini Ok so who would you cast as Eve? I think Charlize Theron ??? 2mo
CatLass007 @Ddzmini I think she‘s a good choice, particularly because of her height. And I think I can picture her with Eve‘s cheap haircut that she‘s always running her hands through. Daryl Hannah was in Blade Runner as Pris, and I thought she was great in that. Maybe she‘d make a good Eve. (edited) 2mo

Today is my friend Richard‘s 74th birthday. I just got new glasses and was going to give myself a couple of days to adjust before I started this. But birthday. At least I‘ve picked out a bookmark.

CatLass007 Richard is one of my favorite writers I‘ve never read. He is a wonderful storyteller so I‘m certain his books are wonderful. My other favorite writer I‘ve never read is Jim Gath, who I worked with at USA TODAY. I stumbled across him on Facebook a few years ago. Now he‘s in Arizona running Tierra Madre Horse and Human Sanctuary. 2mo

Bad Cree: A Novel | Jessica Johns

Pickpick

#ReadAway2024 I can‘t remember the Litten who recommended this book to me. Thank you. This is a story, described as a horror story, of a Cree family. The the one cultural aspect that stood out to me is that men are rarely even mentioned. The Cree are not a patriarchal people, instead the family is cared for by the Auntys. I wasn‘t particularly horrified by this story but I was impressed with the female friendships.
