Silent vampire classic with a small orchestra was an eerie & fun Halloween treat. The skilled silent filmmakers ripped off Stoker back in the day, but it made my husband want to read Stoker's classic, which he's seen me read twice. #film #vampire #Dracula

SamAnne What a wonderful experience! Many years ago an old Episcopalian cathedral in Spokane WA would host a silent horror movie with live music played on the ginormous church organ! I saw both Noferatu and Mephistopheles before the party-pooping conservatives in the church put the vanish on it. It was amazing. 4d

I would like to say the men in this are very dramatic, but this is also true for Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray etc… maybe everyone really did talk/think this flamboyantly? 🤔

This did not survive the re-read. I'm going to read it on stream because my chat voted for it and it's a classic, but wow, Bram sure had ISSUES. He's obviously tormented by his own desires (especially since the man he loved was a jerk), and the anti-Roma racism is distressing, along with the constant re-affirmation of Victorian mores and gender norms. Harker's journal at the beginning is the best part. Skip the rest. Carmilla was so much better.

A new favourite!

I don't know why it took me this long to read the book that mostly started it all. I've always enjoyed Vampire Lore and read plenty of other Vampire stories, so I'm baffled with myself for not reading this.

An excellent story, in a distinctive writing style that kept me up way to late.

Now I need to read more of the original Vampire Lore

This month's #HashtagBrigade pick was kind of a reread for me. I read it last year with #DraculaDaily which, while super fun, is also not exactly the best way to read this book for the first time. So I liked reading it in order and in one month instead of six 😂 Now I might do Dracula Daily again next year lol Anyway, while there are places where the action bogs down a little, and the ending feels a little rushed, this book still has some ⬇

Combined with the fact that you go WEEKS in the summer without anything happening, so I would kind of forget what was happening 😂 I think I may try it next year now that I know how the story goes and who all the characters are. 12mo

Some of the out of order entries work best the way Stoker wrote them. This year, I've re-read through DD (still going!) and it's fun to revisit this way. 🖤 12mo

I reread this classic every two years. If ever the idea that things can change over time is true, this is one of those times. For some reason, I was more annoyed than ever at the men in this book and how they fawned not just over Lucy but even the one I think is really the heroine of this book, Mina. Without her, the men would never have been able to do squat. Maybe I'm angry because gender inequality is STILL such an issue in this country. #vote

dabbe With all this paleness and blood loss and (I don't know) seeing Mina and Dracula together (what a grotesque scene), why didn't they give her any transfusions like they did for Lucy? Did I miss something somewhere? And I got more annoyed this time around reading it. How dense can these men be? Seriously? But I pretty much hated it because my heart still goes thud when I remember Frank Langella as Dracula in 1979. Gary Oldman was creepy not sexy. But it did have Cary Elwes and Billy Campbell. 12mo

CatLass007 It was #blahblahblah, wasn‘t it. I don‘t know anything about Bram Stoker‘s opinions regarding women. But Jonathan, Van Helsing, and Lucy‘s former suitors don‘t seem to think much of Mina. dabbe It's interesting to note that Dracula really hasn't been in the last 10 or so chapters. He's been flitting at the window as a bat/wolf and was seen as himself by Harker, who recognized him, but that's it. He took center stage at the beginning and looks like he will at the end. dabbe Every time Van Helsing leaves or Seward has to go home to his practice or Holmwood has to run home again to care for daddy, we all know what's going to happen to Lucy. It's like knowing the TITANIC is going to sink. We know what's going to happen, but we keep reading anyway, hoping against hope that she'll be okay. So frustrating, especially when Van Helsing knows what's going on. ARGHH!! 13mo

My annotated copies has a note about how dangerous transfusions were back then because they didn‘t know about blood types. My copy notes that they thought people of “nobility, wealth would do better with blood from another person from the upper classes. dabbe It's easy to think that Lucy is the main female here--with all the men loving her and Dracula draining her, but it's Mina who is the female force to be reckoned with. All of these Victorian notions of the innocent woman (Lucy's always in white, right?) are shoved to the side with Mina. She's even traveling the same path as Jonathan to rescue him, and she's doing it on her own! I love Mina! 🧡🖤🧡 13mo

Clare-Dragonfly I made a connection on this read that Lucy‘s strange attacks start out specifically on the grave of a suicide. I don‘t know exactly what that would have meant to the CoE of the time, but from their comments earlier it‘s obviously a particularly bad place to be. 13mo

dabbe The suspense for me is always the idea that Mina has no idea what\'s going on (even though she records the ship\'s information), but we do! Usually one runs across dramatic irony in dramas, but Stoker is exemplary at this technigue since the very beginning. We know exactly what\'s going on, but the characters take forever to get a clue. 13mo
