Joyland | Stephen King
A STUNNING NEW NOVEL FROM ONE OF THE BEST-SELLING AUTHORS OF ALL TIME! The #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carny and confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and the ways both will change his life forever. "I love crime, I love mysteries, and I love ghosts. That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book, which is one of my favorites. I also loved the paperbacks I grew up with as a kid, and for that reason, were going to hold off on e-publishing this one for the time being. Joyland will be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual book."Stephen King

Here‘s my progress in this book. It‘s not what I‘m used to reading from Stephen King. I was expecting this book to be similar to his other books that I‘ve read. I‘ve read Carrie, Christine, Misery, The Shining, Doctor Sleep and IT and I enjoyed those but this is kind of boring. It‘s sweet and sentimental but it doesn‘t feel right coming from a horror writer. Will I finish it? I don‘t know. Maybe but I‘m not having a good time reading it.

TrishB A lot of his later writing is not horror. 2d

I decided to start this book. I always want to read Stephen King every Fall but I never feel like I have time to read him. This book is different from other Stephen King books I‘ve read but it‘s not bad. I‘ve read The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Carrie, Christine, Misery and IT. I liked all of those books but I still want to read more of his books.

4⭐
⬗ While nothing about this book had me super psyched, it was still a decent coming-of-age story set in the 70s. I thought Mr. King did a good job capturing that time period.
⬗ The narration by Michael Kelly was sufficient but unfortunately, his voice was so pleasant that I found it easy to tune him out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A very strange coming of age story. Devin, desperate to overcome heartache, takes a job at Joyland to distract his mind and body. Surrounded by eccentric characters, he finds himself immersed in an unsolved murder. Though mystical elements come into play, this is not “typical” King, which is evident by the Hard Case Crime imprint. Devin is a fab narrator and I enjoyed getting to “know” him. A fun October #bookclub pick! #coverlove

It's always the surprises we remember most, and Joyland was, for me, the epitome of an unanticipated gem hiding in King's canon. While I certainly enjoyed King's first foray into the world of Hard Case Crime, Joyland is miles beyond that first effort. Engaging and likable characters, a unique setting, a compelling mystery, and a touch of the supernatural combine to make this an unforgettable ride. 5/5

I finished this tonight and came straight here just to share how much I enjoyed it.

This one does have a slower pace, but it flows so smoothly from lightly reminiscent, to tense, to depths of emotion I found surprising. The characters were relatable and the plot went in unexpected directions. And the ending left me emotionally drained in a ball on my couch... but in a good way.

Overall, I really liked this one and would definitely recommend it

7-14-23: My 74th finished book of 2023! This didn‘t feel like a Stephen King novel to me. It‘s taken me way longer than usual to finish this short book. As you can see I‘m amongst boxes due to my move to Philadelphia. This story takes place in 1973. Dev Jones gets a job at a carnival called Joyland. Joyland might be haunted. Dev is nursing a broken heart. Annie and Mike need Dev‘s help and vice versa. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣7️⃣4️⃣

5feet.of.fury It took me a while to get into this one, I ended up liking it. But it was slow going, and took me forever for how short it was 1y

Once again, I fell behind on my #Roll100 read. This read was for April. To be honest, I didn't enjoy this one. I thought a majority of it was pretty pointless and boring. The end was a bit better, though - at least something happened. Hopefully, my next read will be a bit better. Love my #LitsyLove mug! ❤️

From the cover, I thought it had horror elements but not, it is more a mystery suggesting some mild paranormal elements. But the story is more than that. It‘s about Devin, how his life will change after he took a job at Joyland. The story has some sad scenes, at least for me, how Devin and his father were still dealing with grief, his constant suicidal ideations. But it is also how Devin grew, it‘s about friendship. A very slow pace reading⬇️

Gissy (Cont.) Another character driven. I think that to enjoy this novel is because you like Mr. King character driven writing style. I‘m not an expert but there are some elements in how SK describes characters that reminds me how Hemingway described characters or daily events. Maybe not an accurate comparison🤷🏽‍♀️
I liked very much this story but I can understand why some persons don‘t. 3.8/4⭐️

5feet.of.fury A surprisingly short King! I found it really slow to start. But once we got to Annie & Mike I really enjoyed it. 2y
BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury sometimes King can start off soooooo slow, but once he hits his stride it‘s go time! This is definitely one of those times 2y
BookwormAHN Loved it. And for a short book the story was really well woven. 2y
NikkiM5 Agreed, it took a minute to get going. But that usually makes me excited, his slow starts always lead to deep character development. It was a joy (teehee) to read, and I love how it fits in King‘s Universe. Off the top of my head, The Shining and The Institute. 2y
BarkingMadRead @NikkiM5 I love when he drops those little Easter eggs in there 2y
bthegood @BarkingMadRead @5feet.of.fury @BookwormAHN @NikkiM5 I feel King is just a good story teller - he builds up the suspense, he develops the characters - in the end it all comes together without a character having to explain why everything happened or how it happened. 2y
BarkingMadRead @bthegood yes! He‘s definitely a master at that!! 2y
Bklover I think my favorite thing about him is how familiar his characters always feel. I love this one! 2y

Knocked out my #bookspin tonight. I was surprised by the amount of heart King put into this crime story, which also became a bit of a bildungsroman and tearjerker. The crime, committed before the book opens, is pure King though: murder on a haunted house ride in an amusement park. Nice job, Mr. King. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my 3rd Stephen King book and second hard cases book by him. Other than his uncomfortable need to include sexual thoughts and situations at times in his stories, I‘m truly coming to really loving his writing style. I never thought I‘d say King wrote one of the most wholesome scenes I‘ve read in a long time!
