The Similars
The Similars | Rebecca Hanover
When six clones join Emmeline's prestigious boarding school, she must confront the heartbreak of seeing her dead best friend's face each day in class in this exhilarating and riveting debut by Rebecca Hanover. Junior year just got a lot more cutthroat. This fall, six new students are joining the junior class at the elite Darkwood Academy. But they aren't your regular over-achieving teens. They're clones. And they're joining the class alongside their originals. The Similars are all anyone can talk about: Who are these clones? What are the odds that all of them would be Darkwood students? And who is the madman who broke the law against cloning to create them? Emmaline Chance couldn't care less. Her best friend, Oliver, died over the summer and it's all she can do to get through each day without him. Then she comes face-to-heartbreaking-face with Levi--Oliver's exact DNA copy and one of the Similars. Emma wants nothing to do with the Similars, except she keeps getting pulled deeper into their clique. She can't escape the dark truths about the clones or her prestigious school. No one can be trusted...not even the boy she is falling for with Oliver's face.

Hey #teamGameSleighers! Here is the third weekly game for #WinterGames2021! It runs all week and unlimited points are allowed. The first book I am tagging is The Holiday Swap - a similar book would be The Prince and the Pauper. Now your turn!

See All 365 Comments
LitStephanie I am a little confused. Are we supposed to tag books that are similar the the Prince and the Pauper, then? Or will you be doing separate posts with different books and we comment on that? 2y

This one seems to be rather like a certain yeast-based spread: you either love it or you hate it. I‘m definitely in the former camp, in fact I enjoyed it so much I‘ve bought the sequel. 4🌟

This felt a bit too much like a Scooby Doo caper. (I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn‘t for those meddling kids!) I liked the premise but it got too convoluted and outrageous. Essentially 6 kids start at a new school but they are clones of 6 other kids at the school -well 5, actually since 1 of the originals died shortly before the clones showed up. Chaos ensues. #scoobysnacks

TerriGreen Zoinks! A clone caper?!! Bring on the Scooby snacks.🤣 4y

4/5 ⭐
If you ever watched the movie The Island with Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson, this is the YA adaptation but set in a Vermont boarding school. The writing is sort of disorienting which isn't a bad thing--it actually helped me connect with Emma's pov. I don't quite get The Similar powers. It wasn't really explained. I hope there's more of Gravelle in the sequel cause he's fucked up. Takes on a lot of topics like xenophobia & citizenship

This is the kind of book people point to when they think YA is not for grown ups—too much angst and not enough plausibility. Despite the immense suspension of disbelief required, I still enjoyed it and will check out the next one.

Finished the tagged book last night and the other book today.

The Similars was very generic YA with sci-fi bent. MC was annoying to me. Half the twists made no sense, and the one major one at the end was heavily telegraphed throughout the book.

Let Me List The Ways was above average contemporary YA romance. Likeable MC who struggles with type 1 diabetes. Central friendship was well defined and believable. Although too wholesome for my taste.

I‘m not usually into science fiction, but the description of this ARC (available January 2019) sounds super suspenseful! Have any of you read this one yet? Is it on your TBR? #thesimilars

Blurb: “When six clones join Emmeline's prestigious boarding school, she must confront the heartbreak of seeing her dead best friend's face each day in class in this exhilarating and riveting debut...” #tbr #arc

Winter TBR!
❄️
I‘m planning on mood-reading my way through December, but I did put together a stack of books I‘d love to get to in the next few snowy months. Some books just feel wintry to me, especially longer titles and SFF, or books set in colder climates. Are there certain books that you gravitate towards in the winter?
❄️
Thank you so much to the tagged publishers for the pictured ARCs!

This story sounded unique &for the 1st half or so of the book I was thoroughly enjoying it. W/the sci-fi, mystery mix this seemed the beginning of a good YA series. But then things began to turn &I found myself rolling my eyes as it fell into familiar YA traps: predictable twists &teens who can outsmart adults. I really struggled with the last 15% of the book. I think teens will enjoy this but I feel adults will share my sentiments more.

An elite high school is thrown into a tailspin when 6 cloned students are invited to attend the school. These students‘ “originals” are attending as juniors and seniors at the school. When they turn into each other, it sparks all kinds of mayhem

This was highlighted as a buzz worthy YA book at BEA. Honestly it was all rather silly and way too predictable. The premise is interesting but so predictable as to send me into fits of eye rolling.

JenP I will say that despite the fact that is was painfully lacking in subtlety, I still felt entertained at times. It probably will be a blockbuster 6y
