Big Questions | Anders Nilsen
62 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A New York Times Notable Book of 2011, included on Amazon.com, Publishers Weekly, and NPR'S Best Comics lists A haunting postmodern fable, Big Questions is the magnum opus of Anders Nilsen, one of the brightest and most talented young cartoonists working today. This beautiful minimalist story, collected here for the first time, is the culmination of ten years and more than six hundred pages of work that details the metaphysical quandaries of the occupants of an endless plain, existing somewhere between a dream and a Russian steppe. A downed plane is thought to be a bird and the unexploded bomb that came from it is mistaken for a giant egg by the group of birds whose lives the story follows. The indifferent, stranded pilot is of great interest to the birds--some doggedly seek his approval, while others do quite the opposite, leading to tensions in the group. Nilsen seamlessly moves from humor to heartbreak. His distinctive, detailed line work is paired with plentiful white space and large, often frameless panels, conveying an ineffable sense of vulnerability and openness. Big Questions has roots in classic fables--the birds and snakes have more to say than their human counterparts, and there are hints of the hero's journey, but here the easy moral that closes most fables is left open and ambiguous. Rather than lending its world meaning, Nilsen's parable lets the questions wander where they will.

Is anyone else have trouble seeing people's TBR? I'm trying to do some snooping and it isn't working for me 😔 Also experiencing some lagging. Not all pictures will load. Are these the issues that people were talking about over the last couple of days? I thought I'd gotten past these humps 😑😑😑

MirrorMask I can see your tbr, no problem. However, it takes a while for pictures to load for me. I figured it was just my phone, though. 6y
vkois88 @MirrorMask thank you for checking... hmmm. I have no idea what the issue is. I just looked, and I can see yours. Idk why I can see some and not others. Ugh. I miss old Litsy 😕 6y
DGRachel I have picture load lag for weeks now. I just figured it was the new (annoying) normal. Haven‘t had a problem looking at TBRs but I‘ll go double check now. If I have issues, I‘ll let you know. 6y
See All 10 Comments
Tomigirl44 I didn‘t even know we could see someone else‘s tbr, books read, etc (I‘m relatively new to Litsy) so thanks for helping me learn 😊 I can see your lists and haven‘t had any problems w/Litsy lately. 6y
DGRachel For other people‘s TBRs, I‘m getting book lists without problem but no cover images. 6y
JHSiess No problems with pictures, lists or any aspect of Litsy. I am an Android user. Might make a difference. 6y
vkois88 @Tomigirl44 it's super helpful if you join a swap, or when you just want to send someone something 😊 @dgrachel idk why I have so much trouble with this... I see some, but not all. Covers don't always pop up. And some pictures for blurbs don't always show up either... @JHSiess I'm on a Android as well. I'll keep trying later on and see if they pop up 6y
amb I've been finding it comes and goes, but have not experienced that issue today 6y
vkois88 @amb hmmm, strange 6y
shadowspeak17 I haven‘t had any issues with viewing people‘s TBRs, but sometimes pictures take a while to load. If that happens when I‘ve just opened the app, I refresh the feed once or twice and things usually load just fine after that. 6y

Time for some #LitsyQuestions is it, young lady? Alright then, @GypsyKat 😽
1) Easily my favorite audiobook Trevor Noah‘s ‘Born a Crime‘; anyone else listened to his gorgeous voice?!
2) Harder question! Favorite fiction is a toss-up between ‘This Mortal Coil‘ (Emily Suvada) and ‘Dark Matter‘ (Blake Crouch).
*I won‘t include 2018 releases that may already be my faves!
3) Favorite non-fiction is the awesome #TotalCatMojo
4) Mindy McGinnis

AmyG I agree with Born a Crime. Him reading this book made it my favorite. I was walking around for a week saying “Whaaaaaat?” (edited) 6y
GypsyKat Yes! 🙌 Born A Crime was fantastic as an audiobook! 6y

NovelGirl82 @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I haven't tried to move past that screen yet. I just saw it this morning. 6y
Cinfhen I haven‘t seen it either! @Reviewsbylola 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @NovelGirl82 I was just trying to look at past books I might like to add to my tbr list... 🤓 6y
NovelGirl82 @Cinfhen I just added a screenshot of it. It‘s weird that it‘s only showing up on certain profiles. 6y
PandaPanda Does it mean that additional books are no longer $9.99? 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It looks like extras are still $9.99 @PandaPanda (edited) 6y
NovelGirl82 @PandaPanda I don‘t think so. I think they still are, you‘re just paying the $14.99 each month instead of several months up front, so whatever months you have remaining on your current subscription will be turned in to book credits. Then if you want to add additional books, it will be $9.99. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Is that correct? 6y
tjwill I switched over to monthly because I‘m not sure how much longer I will keep doing botm anyway. I have skipped the past couple of months. 6y
Reviewsbylola I like that the books come out so much cheaper with the yearly subscription, so if they do away with that I‘ll be upset. Didn‘t you say a CS rep from BOTM told you that they are stepping away from the subscription packages? @Cinfhen 6y
NovelGirl82 @Reviewsbylola I only have, I think, 2 months left on my subscription. I wonder if it will renew, or force me in to a month-to-month if I don't choose it now? 6y
Reviewsbylola That‘s definitely a good question. From what Cindy heard, I think they‘re attempting to force everyone to go month to month at some point. 😭 6y
NovelGirl82 @Reviewsbylola hhhmmmm...interesting. That's not cool at all! 6y
Cinfhen Yes, they are definitely trying to do a month to month but it‘s not cost effective @Reviewsbylola I was hoping for another six month package but $10 off isn‘t so great- I think I got 50% off a year subscription last year on Black Friday 6y
Cinfhen It seems new members still get deals but not existing customers 6y
Cinfhen When I asked in September the CS rep told me my best option was to open a new account 6y
Reviewsbylola Good to know. I have always thought that BOTM has excellent CS BUT I do think that they rarely give good incentives to their existing customers. I‘m curious to see whether we all get a book credit for Christmas this year like we did last year. I feel like they have been stingier with the book credits this year. It‘s a shame really, that their best advice is to just open a new account. @Cinfhen 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @NovelGirl82 that‘s what I got out of it! 👍🏻 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @NovelGirl82 I had just renewed mine on October 31. They gave me three credits. 6y
sprainedbrain It just so happened that my 3 month subscription was about to renew, so I did it. My renewal was going to be for 3 months at $14.99, so no price incentive to stick with the plan I had. I took the free credit. 😃 6y
Cinfhen Yeah, I'm not so enamored with BOTM like I used to be @Reviewsbylola I hope we get a free credit again for the holidays! How did u get 3 credits @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks what plan/ deal did u use?!? 6y
TheLibrarian So when I signed up for my new account they put it to monthly and I don‘t have the option to change my plan. I like doing the big monthly plans because you get a slight price discount but on the one month you don‘t. 6y
Cityofamber I did because it‘s a free book! 😂 6y
ApoptyGina69 I went for the month to month and look forward to the credit, but was disappointed I can‘t use it until Jan 23. Overall, the pricing doesn‘t bother me. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Cinfhen I had just renewed mine in October and it said I would get a free book. I was on the 3 month plan. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Cityofamber how do we get the free book? Is it something they just send or is it included in our credits? 6y
Cityofamber @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I got an extra credit :) (they also turned my month I still have into a credit) 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Cityofamber 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 6y
NovelGirl82 I went ahead and went with it! It did add the extra credit on to my account, so that's a bonus! 😊 6y
Pelican71 I‘m with the majority on this thread. I‘ve skipped the last 2 months plus I‘m digging the extra credit. I‘m hoping for something I just have to have for December. Anxious for spoilers 🙈. 6y
NovelGirl82 @Pelican71 Me too! I thought we'd have surely seen some by now!! 6y
The_Heeler_Booklife I just choose the free month. I get December‘s book free, then right near Christmas I will be charged full price. 6y

So my Litsy friends, I️ am thinking about doing a #bookstagram mainly so I️ can follow other bookish Instagrams accounts🙃 and I have so many questions...my main question for now...I️ have temporarily set up an account with a username of Ferociousreader. Does that conjure negative connotations? A friend who meant to call me a “voracious” reader called me this instead (repeatedly 😂🙄) so I️ though I‘d roll with it. What say you, Litsy?

Jess7 I wouldn‘t think anything bad of it. I️ have a #bookstagram too. I‘m on there as booklover7733 if you want follow me. 6y

So, when I click on my Litfluence, I see how many books I've read, how many pages etc. At the bottom is "Book Adds". Naturally I've got a big fat 0 because I have no idea how to add books, or if I even can. There's been at least one book I searched for that I can't blurb about because it's not on Litsy and so I requested it be added. Why can't I add it myself?

What's the deal? Can anyone shed some light?

jenniferw88 Books added means the number of your books people have added to their Litsy via your review/blurb/quote - not how many books have been added to the database due to you. Hope this helps! 7y
DivaDiane Oh, @jenniferw88 thank you! Now I feel a little stupid, though! ☺️ 7y

Ok my fellow book hoarders! I have a question for you.

How do you organize your bookshelves? Do you have an area for what you plan to read next? Do you separate the read books from the not read books?

Alphabetical, by genre, by TBR vs Read, etc?

I'm dying to know!!!

#Questions #Books

Maike The read books by genre, and then alphabetically. I have special shelf boards for my TBR, but those are unsorted. 7y
tpixie I separate read from unread. Then mostly by size. All my cookbooks take one bookcase. My Travel Books eg Fromer‘s - take one shelf. 7y
erzascarletbookgasm I separate fictions from non-fictions. Books by same authors group together. That's about it! 😄 7y
See All 19 Comments
Libby1 Alphabetical by genre with separate sections for Read and TBR! 7y
TrishB Separate - tbr don't go on the bookcases until read. They group authors together. 7y
Kristy_K I use to have both read and tbr mixed together and organized by genre. Recently I separated the two, but still keep each of them by genre. 7y
janeycanuck I keep fiction on one shelf, in alphabetical order by author, paperback separated from hardcover. Non-fiction are on another, roughly grouped by subject. Children's/YA are on a third, grouped by series. TBR are separate, grouped by year acquired and then sorted by height within each year. Feels complicated when I write it all out! 7y
CoffeeCatsBooks I shelve by genre and category, so for example all nautical fiction is together. Or that is how it started out, now I just try to squeeze books in anywhere they will fit. 7y
[DELETED] 206653737 My shelves currently have no rhyme or reason other than that's where they fit. But, I was just thinking yesterday, I should color code them. I have all my books electronic and physical organized on Goodreads by To read (I own) at the library, freebies, and read. Interesting question and discussion! 👍 7y
kspenmoll Nice to think about! Some genres together: gardening, homebuilding, travel, cookbooks, crafts. Hardcover separate for most part from paperbacks. My TBR are grouped separately. All else is hodgepodge except for certain authors in which we own multiple books. We have family bookcases as well. 7y
Redwritinghood You're supposed to organize them? I honestly have no order to mine. I have a separate bookcase for cookbooks, but otherwise they're all mixed up. 7y
That-Bookish-Hiker I have a shelf of signed books, a shelf for my absolutely favorite books and then a self for my classics. Then it kind of just goes by no specific order. 7y
AprilMae No organization, just put on the bookshelf (which is now full) then piles upon piles everywhere lol 7y
Alicia I recently moved and had to go through this!! I have a separate bookshelf with maybe 30 "up next" TBR books. Then I have all fiction alpha by author and non fiction by sort of subject as I see it. I also keep BOTM separate bc of the size. 7y
TEArificbooks My tbr has its own library and is grouped my genre/series. I am a bookcrosser and do not keep many books after I have read them, I give them away for free so the tbr library is huge. The books I keep all fit onto one small bookshelf that I use as a bedstand. Those are grouped by series, read and tbr. 7y
xicanti I've got my permanent collection organized so books of the same size are shelved together. I also keep series in order, unless I've got some volumes in a different format. Otherwise, I don't worry about alphabetizing or ordering by genre. My TBR shelf is elsewhere, and it's roughly organized by genre in case I feel like something in particular. 7y
OrangeMooseReads I recently added shelves and moved things around so my books are in dire need of reorganization. Normally I try to keep authors together, series are always together, beyond that is usually subject and fiction/nonfiction. I try to keep my TBRs in one area so I don't have to search too much for my next read and I don't get sidetracked by a reread. 7y
auntie_jenn no order. they just get shelved and stacked for max capacity, so they're roughly chronological in order of finishing. 7y
litmuggle I keep my the and read books sepret and try to keep them grouped by genre when I have the room. 7y

I have a question for you guys. Most of my TBR Pile are old books I've inherited. I am pretty sure I won't be able to finish them all as they are often written in old german letters and probably are not the easiest reads. My question now: Would you keep the books from this shelf that you had to DNF, because they are all very beautiful? Or would you give them away?

MinDea If I had the space I would keep them. Since they are old and pretty I would put them somewhere other than my typical bookshelf. Like on a side table or on other shelves to highlight them and use them as a decorative piece! 7y
Kalalalatja I like what @MinDea says - use them as decorations some place, if you have the space 👌 7y
CaliforniaCay I would keep them! Maybe not all of them if space was an issue but at least a couple. They look beautiful and someone in your life may someday want to read them. 7y

Sarah83 I would keep them,as long as they won't start smelling badly. Then I would dnf them. 7y

Hey Littens! Have any of you published a book? Or gone through the process? I have a proposal that I want to submit to an agent, but it feels like if you're not in New York you're out of luck.

Any tips or advice?

valeriegeary Fiction or nonfiction? 7y
Brooke_H Are you submitting an entire complete manuscript? Or just beginning beginning the querying process? Your location doesn't matter one bit. 7y
See All 13 Comments
Rachel.Rencher @Brooke_H So I have two things... I have one manuscript halfway done for one book. Someone then told me I should just write an outline, so I did that for my other book. 7y
valeriegeary Always with fiction you need to have a finished manuscript before you start submitting to agents. And @Brooke_H is absolutely right. Location doesn't matter. I'm in Portland, OR, my agent is in NYC. I had no connections. I sent her a cold query and she liked my pages so she asked for the full and the rest is history. The writing, the story.... That's all that matters. 7y
Rachel.Rencher @valeriegeary That's encouraging, thank you! I'm your neighbor in Idaho. Did you just send in a sample chapter at first and wait for your agent to request the full work? 7y
valeriegeary @Rachel.Rencher You follow whatever guidelines the agent has. Some want sample chapters. Some just want query letters. Some have forms to fill out. Their guidelines are usually posted on their agent website. There is a lot of good info on line about the query process. Query Tracker and Writer's Digest are great resources, good places to start anyway. 7y
valeriegeary @Rachel.Rencher Good luck and prepare yourself to be patient and persistent! It can be a rough ride! But know you're not alone! And always, always 7y
valeriegeary @Rachel.Rencher ha! I hit send before I finished that sentence. 🙈 Always keep writing. That's what I meant to say. Keep writing new stories. 😘 7y
Rachel.Rencher @valeriegeary Thank you so much! You're wonderful and that really helped. 😊 7y
Brooke_H @valeriegeary has great advice! Never give up! The process takes literally years sometimes. And if you end up sending sample chapters, make sure they are well edited! But I'm an editor, so of course I would say that. 😉 7y
NikkiDolson I have but I don't have an agent. Finish your manuscript, prepare a one page synopsis and work work work on your query letter. Good luck! 7y
Lucas.Rencher You can do it I'm proud of you 😙 7y

Susannah @www.mybookswap.club Sort of. So far, it's about a graduate student who, while trying to identify her dissertation topic, finds papers in her grandmother's house that possibly link to one of the women accused of witchcraft in 17th C. Salem, MA. It's not fast-paced by any means, but it's moving along, and I want to find out what happens. 7y
MimiLovesToRead @www.mybookswap.club I think i'm going to pass it on. It's really not my cuppa. I'm just honored to have won it in a giveaway. The person i'm giving it to will appreciate it 😉 7y
coffeewithbooks @MyBookSwapClub so far it really good.no I haven't seen it yet. 7y
MaleficentBookDragon @MyBookSwapClub I'm liking it. The writing style is not easy for me; I can't put my finger in it but there's something a little off for me. I just ❤️ the whole Scooby gang with possibly real monsters idea though. I went to my sister's in Virginia for the weekend and left the book at 🏡. 😩😤 (edited) 7y
Victoriahoperose @MyBookSwapClub Seth was super fast paced but a little too much action and characters for me. I know what I'm doing and other lies I tell myself was really great. It was just as a whole a lot of things I feel like we all think and don't want to say, but are comforting and funny from someone else. I definitely recommend 7y
ReadingRover @MyBookSwapClub Its ok. Entertaining but not fabulous. I like the different depictions of all the fairytales throughout the story. 7y

I was really enjoying Big Questions by Anders Nilsen for a while, but then it seemed to go off the rails, and I found it very hard to follow visually. I feel like I missed something, because all the other reviews seem positive. Should I try again or just move on with life and lit?

well.read.panda I quite liked this sequence and a lot of stuff toward the beginning, by the way. Once the big egg took over their lives, I started having trouble with it. 7y
UrsulaMonarch Having not read the book, I love that last sentence. I'm intrigued. 7y
well.read.panda This page is really good! It kinda reminds me of Ant Colony too - self-reflection in unexpected animals. But then the book just kinda falls apart for me, but everyone else seems to love it, so... 7y

What category/genre would you consider books like The Bookshop on the Corner, The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend, Confessions of a Domestic Failure, etc. Light-hearted books with happy endings, not life changing or real meaningful, but fun and relaxing.
