The Best of the Best
The Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction | Gardner Dozois
38 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
For years, The Year's Best Science Fiction has been the most widely read short science fiction anthology of its kind. Now, after twenty-one annual collections, comes the ultimate in science fiction anthologies, The Best of the Best: 20 Years of the Year's Best Science Fiction, in which legendary editor Gardner Dozois selects the very best short stories for this landmark collection. Some notable stories include: "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula K. Le Guin. Coming of age is a difficult passage for any adolescent, but couple that with the potential to be either sex and you've got a dilemma of seismic proportion. Bringing readers back to the world of her classic and best known novel, The Left Hand of Darkness, Le Guin creates a compelling and evocative story of transition. "The Winter Market" by William Gibson. Called the SF Timothy Leary of our times, Gibson returns to the subject that made him a cultural icon, cyberpunk. People who know what they want are often lauded and honored in this society. But when those people start using others to get it, beware! "Trinity" by Nancy Kress. People have searched for God since the dawn of time, but not until the new millennium did they think to find this celestial being through technology. Since soon after the series began, Kress has been an annual and esteemed contributor to The Year's Best Science Fiction. Contributors include: * Stephen Baxter * Greg Bear * William Bigson * Terry Bisson * Pat Cadigan * Ted Chiang * John Crowley * Tony Daniel * Greg Egan * Molly Gloss * Eileen Gunn * Joe Haldeman * James Patrick Kelly * John Kessel * Nancy Kress * Ursula K. Le Guin * Ian R. MacLeod * David Marusek * Paul McAuley * Ian McDonald * Maureen F. McHugh * Robert Reed * Mike Resnick * Geoff Ryman * William Sander * Lucius Shepard * Robert Silverberg * Brian Stableford * Bruce Sterling * Charles Stross * Michael Swanwick * Steven Utley * Howard Waldrop * Walter Jon Williams * Connie Willis * Gene Wolfe With work spanning two decades, The Best of the Best stands as one of the ultimate science fiction anthologies ever published.

How crazy that I had twenty-two 5⭐️ books in 2022, and here they are! The 5% 5⭐️ rule held true again since I finished 444 books this year. Best of the year goes to Sea of Tranquility. Nine I listened to as audiobooks, and nine are nonfiction. #Top22of22

Cinfhen OMG 😱 444 🙌🏻#ROCKSTAR 2y

Ok, I‘m ready to share my #Top22of22
Just tagging the #TOB23 crew to get started but hoping everyone will share their favorite reads from 2022😁
My list has changed over the past days & I‘m pretty sure it could look totally different next week but it‘s the weekend and I‘m excited to see what everyone loved this year 🥰

batsy Fun list! Almost all TBR for me but yes, How High We Go really left an impression 🙌🏾 2y
See All 31 Comments
Hooked_on_books Nice list! I like your variety here. I‘m not quite ready to put mine together but will definitely post one near the end of the month. 2y
squirrelbrain Ooh exciting! I see a couple that will probably make my list too, and some that I‘ll get to next year. I‘ll try to post over the weekend…. 2y
Cinfhen Thanks @Hooked_on_books I tried to include a variety of titles even though I do mostly read from 2 or 3 genres🤓 How High was certainly one of the most original books I read this past year @batsy 2y
Cinfhen Can‘t wait to see your list @squirrelbrain 😍 2y
Chelsea.Poole #trendsetter !! 😉 thanks for getting us started. Love these best of the year lists! I see several that I‘ve had on my radar but didn‘t actually get around to that I‘ll have to make a point to now! Like House of Sticks, Love After Love and Ones Company. 2y
Chelsea.Poole Also Marriage Portrait will make my list. and I read Louding Voice years ago but what a distinctive character! And you have one of my all time favorites here, which I still think about regularly 2y
BittersweetBooks Love these, so many I still need to read. Thanks for sharing!! 2y
MicheleinPhilly What an eclectic list! I‘m hoping to do a good chunk of reading once I finish work for the year so will wait until the 31st to do mine. 😜 2y
KarenUK Love your list. I‘ve taken a screenshot! Marriage Portrait is on my list too, and you know I love Tiny Beautiful Things! I think I‘m almost there with my list, as I have almost zero reading time for the rest of this year!!! Oh the joys of retail!!!! 😝 2y
TrishB Thanks for sharing 😁 I‘ll definitely do mine next week as soon as work is done!! Going to have to screenshot all these now. Woohoo! 2y
RebelReader Several of these will be on my list as well, but that‘s no surprise. Carlotta and Ocean State are cued up for next week. I‘ll do my list on 12/31. 🤣 2y
Suet624 Screenshot here too. Thanks for sharing. 2y
sarahbarnes Such a great list! So many on here that I could have on my list as well, and a few that are new to me! Thanks for sharing! 📚 2y
Megabooks Great choices! Tiny is an all-time fav and a few of these are on my list too: Lucy, Cyclorama. I think I‘m going to post my twenty 5⭐️ and then runners up in another grid. But not until after Christmas. 😘😘 (edited) 2y
merelybookish Gosh, this is exciting! I know my TBR is about to quadruple! Thanks for the tag Cindy! Excited to compile my list and review everyone else's! 😄 2y
Ruthiella I‘ve only read two from your list: How High We Go and One‘s Company. I liked them both a lot. I‘ll take a look at my 2022 reading and try to post. 2y
jlhammar What a great list! Several of these are going on my TBR. The Colony is definitely among my favs of the year. I‘ll probably wait until the very end of the year to decide on my top reads. I hope to get lots of reading in over the next couple of weeks (The Marriage Portrait and Lucy by the Sea are both in my stack). 2y
BarbaraBB I love this time of year with these lists and I live yours! I‘ll post mine later because I hope I have some potential favorites stacked to bring with me on vacation. Screenshotting yours of course!! ❤️❤️ 2y
Deblovestoread A few in common, more on my tbr (likely from your reviews) and more to explore makes a great list! 2y
Kimberlone Still hoping to finish another few books before the end of the month so will do mine in a couple weeks! 2y
Cinfhen I wonder if I jumped the gun to quick posting Dec 15 @Kimberlone @Deblovestoread @BarbaraBB @jlhammar @Ruthiella @merelybookish @Megabooks @sarahbarnes @Suet624 @RebelReader @TrishB @KarenUK @MicheleinPhilly @BittersweetBooks @Chelsea.Poole but I don‘t have anything REALLY exciting left to begin until January 1😜 can‘t wait to see all of your posts!!! 2y
jlhammar @Cinfhen I love that you got the ball rolling! You can always post an addendum if you read something else amazing before the end of the year. 2y
Cinfhen That‘s true @jlhammar I‘m just a bit impatient 😂 2y
TrishB I‘ve got one ready, doing a just in case for the next week or so! 2y
Centique Oh goody! I‘ve been impatiently waiting for the lists to begin! 🙌💕 So many of these books (screenshotted of course) are calling to me. I haven‘t had a whole lot of 5 star reads this year unfortunately, so I don‘t know if I can come up with 22 🤪….. 2y
CarolynM I‘ve taken a screenshot for future reference. Will try to put something together before Christmas but, like @Centique there haven‘t been a lot of books I‘ve really loved this year. 2y
Cinfhen I read a lot of books this year @CarolynM @Centique but very few were 5 stars!! From these 22 only a handful got 5 stars but I did enjoy all of them😊 2y
Cinfhen **Disclaimer** I swapped out Diamond Eye for Escape Artist 2y

It was very bizarre to go back through what I have read this year and be like whoa that was *this* year? 2022 has been long but in a good way for me. It was pretty hard to narrow down, but here are some of my top picks so far:

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood
The Snail and the Whale by Julia Donaldson
Heartstopper series by Alice Oseman
This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay

#LittensWantToKnow

I had to wait until the last day of the year to post my #top20in2020 because there are so many late additions to the list (and because I love to overthink things). Focusing was a challenge for large parts of this year but I managed to read some pretty wonderful books. Looking forward to the reads 2021 will bring.

MicheleinPhilly Several of these are on my TBR! Happy New Year! 4y
Reggie The Library at Mt. Char, Women Talking, Beach Read, Conversations with Friends...all favorites of mine. Nice list. Happy New Year, Jennifer! 4y

Centique Man, I‘ve spent the last few days adding dozens of books to my TBR. It‘s like a beautiful madness. I love this time of year, getting a fix of book lists for my addiction! Mdargusch I haven‘t read any of these although I do own a few. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y

LibrarianRyan really. NO. I loved Ninth House, but it is barly Sci-Fi. And Five feet apart wasn't a big book it was a big movie. and don't get me started on Pumpkin heads. I haven't read it yet, but I am this week as my library copy just came in. 5y
WanderingBookaneer @LibrarianRyan : I voted for Gideon the Ninth in the Fantasy Category and I agree with your assessment of Five Feet Apart. 5y
WanderingBookaneer @umbrellagirl : That was me last year! 5y

Every year it‘s hard to narrow down my favorites of the year. But here they are! My best #18in2018. My favorite of the year was The Air You Breathe by Frances de Pontes Peebles. I‘m looking forward to reading her other book, The Seamstress, in 2019.

What are your best of the year? Would you comment here with a tag to your favorite book of the year (if you can! It‘s not easy!)

TheNerdyProfessor A Little Life 😍😩😩😍 6y

One of my favorite things about reading is that everyone brings their own unique experiences and personal history to it, and sometimes that allows for different interpretations of the same story.

The #goodreadschoiceawards are here. Do you vote in them? If you do, what‘s your policy on which categories to vote in?
I won‘t vote in a category unless I have read at least 2 of the books (and can thus compare) or if the one book I‘ve read is an absolute standout.
I‘m surprised at how few favorites I have read this year.

TrishB Pretty much the same and I was surprised how few I‘d read too! 6y

This was really difficult to whittle down, but here are my best 17 of 2017. They are listed in reverse order in which I read them, not rank ordered. I‘d like to give a special shout-out to The Patriots, which I think is one of the most underrated books of 2017. #17in2017
