The Weekenders: Travels in the Heart of Africa | Alex Garland
26 posts | 3 read
What would happen if you took some of Britain's best writing talent, put them on a plane and flew them to one of the most extraordinary and inaccessible places on the planet? What would happen if you took Irvine Welsh from the streets of Edinburgh and showed him a remote, dangerous village in Africa? What would happen if you flew Alex Garland into one of the world's most hazardous war zones? And how would Tony Hawks react if you dragged him away from his tennis and asked him to write a song with a Sudanese tribesman? With Victoria Glendinning, Andrew O'Hagan, Giles Foden and WF Deedes, these writers have experienced for themselves one of the most beautiful and yet troubled lands in the world The Sudan. This remarkable collection of short stories and evocative travel writing is their response -as diverse and unpredictable as the country itself.

#weekendreading Just starting Evil Never Dies this one this morning.

Snuggled in my favorite reading chair, with a warm blanket, a cup of coffee, my kindle, a pup curled at my feet and one behind my head (watching out the window for nefarious creatures). #saturdayvibes

This is my weekend of reading. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind will take me to Malawi for #ReadingAfrica2022.

What are you reading this weekend?

#WeekendReading

Velvetfur Oohh I haven't got Malawi yet! Thanks, I'll look for that one! I'm going to read Angola actually - 'The World's of "Mestre" Tamoda' by Uanhenga Xitu ? 3y
Velvetfur PS I've got Covid now too, so lots of reading time cos I can't go out, hehehe 👍🏻 3y
BarbaraBB I just read the same Malawi book, and so did @Texreader ! I hope you both will enjoy it too @Andrew65 @Velvetfur And I hope your Covid is mild! 3y

Librarybelle Lots of good reading this weekend! 3y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur oh no, sorry to hear that 😢 Hope it‘s very mild. I found the key was rest, rest, rest and when you felt ready to get back to normal rest again as puts you backwards. But then again was badly hit by Delta. Hope you recover quickly 💕 3y
Andrew65 @BarbaraBB That sound promising. 3y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle Hopefully. 3y
Bookwormjillk @Velvetfur I hope you have a quick recovery. @Andrew65 looks like a good weekend. The wind is literally howling here so I‘m going to binge watch the Olympics and pick a novel from my pile. Not sure what- maybe 3y
Velvetfur @BarbaraBB @Bookwormjillk Thank you lovelies, it's been mild so it's ok but it's really lingering which is annoying, I can't seem to fully get rid of it. I tested positive on day 11, argh! But it's pouring with rain here so I wouldn't have gone out today anyway 😂 3y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 Thank you 😊 I'm pretty sure it's Omicron as it's been not too bad, I'm sorry to hear you had Delta though 🙁 I've made sure to rest loads and not really do anything, haven't been exercising even gently, and I feel mostly better now apart from a slightly phlegm-y chest - which I feel lucky for because I have asthma so it could have gone the other way.... 3y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur That‘s great news 💕 3y
Andrew65 I was still in bed full time until the end of day 12 so you have done well @Velvetfur Now 5 months on and just feeling almost back to normal. But still get tireder at night earlier than I used to. Almost left me with major flare ups of GERD and IBS and on a long list for cameras. 3y
Andrew65 @Bookwormjillk Definitely a windy weekend! 3y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Will have to check out the Angola book. 3y
Velvetfur @Andrew65 ugh that sounds horrible, and going on for so long too! I know at the time you said about the IBS, actually it's aggravated mine a bit too now I think about it. I wish all the best for you and wifey continuing to work through your recovery 💜 3y
Crazeedi That book sounds good ! I'll be curious to hear what you think 3y
Crazeedi @Velvetfur get well soon❤️ 3y
Crazeedi @Bookwormjillk Olympics and reading on my list today too! Finally stopped snowing here, but it's very cold today. I'm going to help my sister tomorrow who is recovering from knee replacement tomorrow 3y
Velvetfur @Crazeedi thank you xxx 3y

I am starting a new Saturday feature, #WeekendReading.

For a lot of us we get the chance to read more at weekends so each Saturday let‘s share what we are reading that weekend.

I am listening to The PoisonWood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (#AuthoraMonth) and When Hoopoes Go To Heaven by Gaile Parkin. Both of which over countries for #ReadingAfrica 2022

What are you reading? Let‘s Share!

TheSpineView Thanks for the tag! 😘🤩📖📚 3y

Bookworm04 @Andrew65 seen ur post joined tagged you :) exciting 3y
Tove_Reads About to finish Almost dead by Ragan ad starting Coben‘s Missing You and Killer Deal by Sofie Sarenbrant. 3y
Andrew65 @Bookworm04 Great 😍 3y
MaGoose Reading The Additional Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Hall. And trying to decide what else to read this weekend - can't decide, too many good choices! 3y
Andrew65 @MaGoose I hate trying to choose books which is why sometimes I produce lists. 3y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads That‘s my commute read for Monday, Almost Dead. 3y
Bookwormjillk A nostalgic read for me- when I was in high school researching for my science fair project at my town‘s library I came across a long shelf under a forgotten window labeled “mystery”. I checked this book out a lifelong love of reading began 3y
Velvetfur This is a fab idea Andrew! I'm concentrating on 'Awakening The Buddha Within' which I want to finish from last year (!) and recently started the audiobook 'The Quaker' so will probably listen a bit more of that over weekend. Which countries are your two Africa books for? 3y
Andrew65 @Bookwormjillk I‘ve only read A, sounds like I need to get on the other 24. 3y
EadieB I‘m finishing The Harlech Killings then hope to start Almost Dead and i‘ve got The Hundredth Man on audio but can‘t really get into that one. Been listening off and on for the past week and can‘t seem to figure out what‘s going on. May need to start over and read along with physical book. I feel lost! 3y
Bookwormjillk The Poisonwood Bible is a good one for #ReadingAfrica and #AuthorAMonth. I may have to re-read it this month. 3y
DGRachel I have a schedule printed so I can read everything I want to before library and book club deadlines, but I‘m already three days behind. 🤣🤣 I‘m hoping to finish The Dead of Winter by Nicola Upson, Bad Luck Bridesmaid by Alison Rose Greenberg, and The Guest List by Lucy Foley this weekend. 3y
Andrew65 @Velvetfur Is that the tagged book at the end of this post? If so I read it last year I believe. The PoisonWood Bible - Democratic Republic of Congo, Hoopoes - Swaziland (Eswatini now). Your bokks sound interesting. 3y
Andrew65 @Bookwormjillk Kills two birds with one stone and a good read, 62% in, but quite a Chunkster at 640 Pages. 3y
EadieB @Andrew65 I read the Poisonwood Bible around 2010 and enjoyed it but haven‘t read any of her other books. I‘ve seen where others have said that her other books don‘t measure up to her first one. 3y
Andrew65 @DGRachel Some good books you‘re in the middle of. (edited) 3y
Andrew65 @EadieB Hard to follow the success of a week renowned first book. 3y
AmyG This weekend it‘s 3y
Andrew65 @EadieB Forgot to post that one. Hoping to get to The Harlech Killings tomorrow. Some books just do not work with audiobooks for some reason. Others are great. Almost Dead will be my commute read on Monday. 3y
Andrew65 @AmyG That‘s a great read and a a good second book in the series out too. (edited) 3y
ShananigansReads I want to finish up Jingle Bell Beard on Kindle. Not sure what audiobook I want to start next 3y
ElizaMarie I‘m about to start 3y
ElizaMarie @Bookwormjillk oooo I love Kinsey. I‘m currently up on 3y
CocoReads Reading Heart Bones by Colleen Hoover and Watching Over You by Lori Foster. Also it‘s been at least a year since I physically set foot in a library—I‘m planning on a quick trip the my local branch in a couple hours when I‘m cleaned up 3y
KellyK Working my way through Harlem Shuffle and listening to Death on the Nile.

I binge-read the Alphabet Mysteries a few years ago and was just finishing up Y isfor Yesterday when a saw the news that Sue Grafton had passed away. 😢
3y
Clwojick Currently reading A Flicker in the Dark, and then I‘ll be moving on to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. 3y
Lizpixie I‘m reading Ancestral Night by Elizabeth Bear, the 1st in the White Space series, a SciFi set 100s of years in the future. So far it‘s been brilliant! 3y
CoffeeNBooks I love this idea! Thanks for the tag! 3y
Andrew65 @Bookjunkie57 The last of the Christmas books? 3y
Andrew65 @ElizaMarie Love that book. (edited) 3y
Andrew65 @ElizaMarie I really do need to get to that series. 3y
Andrew65 @CocoReads I have on,y bern in twice, once to pick up a reserve, once to return it. 3y
Andrew65 @KellyK So sad she didn‘t get to finished the series. 3y
Andrew65 @Clwojick Love the Seven Husbands, enjoy! 3y
Andrew65 @Lizpixie Let me know what it‘s like. 3y
Andrew65 @CoffeeNBooks Great to hear 😊 3y
EadieB @KellyK @Andrew65 Grafton passed away in 2017. I was just reading about her on Wiki. Quite interesting: While going through a "bitter divorce and custody battle that lasted six long years", Grafton imagined ways to kill or maim her ex-husband. Her fantasies were so vivid that she decided to write them down. She told her daughter a ghost would haunt anyone who tried to finish her series. As far as she was concerned, the alphabet ended with “Y.” (edited) 3y
Librarybelle Lots is great #ReadingAfrica2022 reading this weekend! 3y
Megabooks The Poisonwood Bible is great! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Great idea! I will be reading for the second week of #sundaybuddyread The Other Side of Midnight and Brazen: Rebel Ladies Who Rocked the World. If there's time I also have Death on the Nile. I don't usually get much audiobook listening in on the weekends but I have Cleopatra: A Life and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck going, too. I was iffy on reading Kingsolver this month but seeing the comments here, I might try The Poisonwood Bible. 3y
Andrew65 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Just be aware it‘s a big book. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yes, a chunkster. And likely the #1 reason I was apprehensive to pick one up. Hey, if I bail, so be it. 😁 3y
PageShifter Thanks for the tag. I have also read The PoisonWood Bible! 3y
IamIamIam Great idea, Andrew!! Also a great way to add to #MountTBR! 😂 I'm revisiting A Separate Peace, which was a favorite of mine from high school but I'm struggling to remember why... 🤨 And for #Bookspin, I'm hoping to start this later today: 3y
Andrew65 @IamIamIam True #MountTBRAccumulation! Amazing when you read books again and can lead to different thoughts. For me it was 3y
IamIamIam @Andrew65 LOL, your posts are 2 out of 3 that come up with that book as a tag!!! 😂 I stacked it and hopefully, I'll get to it in another WWII frenzy. 😁 3y
AprilMae Currently reading 3y

Crazeedi Oh crikey an I have to get reading this one for #FoodAndLit 3y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi Still trying to decide what book to read for Egypt for the #ReadingAfrica2022 Challenge, but I have read this one in recent years. 3y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Thank you!!! 3y
Kimzey How do I tag a book? 3y
Crazeedi @Kimzey look for the little tag underneath where you are writing a post. Theres a tag and a skull and crossbones, the tag will bring up the place where you can type in book. The skull is if you want to hide your post! 3y
Crazeedi @Andrew65 I'd love a post with Africa books!! 3y
Kimzey @Crazeedi Thank you! 3y
Andrew65 Thanks @Crazeedi for helping @Kimzey to tag a book. 3y
Andrew65 @Crazeedi I‘ll think about how we best do this. 3y

What are you reading? Let‘s all share.
