My daughter‘s favorite book/movie is The Shining. So for her recent birthday her best friend got her this cool book nook. I‘m not that familiar with them, but the attention to detail is incredible (even down to the tiny typewritten sheets on the floor). 🖤

Do y‘all have book nooks as well? Anyone want to share? I‘d love to see!

Thank you for tagging me @TieDyeDude !

I would like to try Stephen King again. I used to have a short story collection of his, but it didn't do it for me, so I would like to read his more mainstream work.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, you'd think I'd like this book because it's very nerdy but it mostly felt like an excuse to shove as many nerdy references in a book as the author could and it lacked substance.

#wondrouswednesday

Doppoetry as for books that impacted me as a teen:

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut
Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates
Anne of Green Gables by L. A. Montgomery
5mo
TieDyeDude I think my first exposure to the Lottery was looking it up after seeing a episode of the Simpsons where Homer threw it in a fire when he realized it wasn't a guide for winning the lottery 🤣
I really liked Ready Player One, but that is a fair critique. I didn't think it was possible, but they shoved even more references into the movie!
I like that Stephen King has branched out in his later career. He's done procedural crime, hitman thriller, etc

5mo
Doppoetry @TieDyeDude I read The Lottery in high school for English the buildup was mindblowing 😂 it isn't as impactful when you know the twist, unfortunately. I suppose that's part of why they teach it Freshman year.

I read RP1 for a book club and it was a struggle because everyone really enjoyed it and I seemed to have only seen the flaws 😅 It's a fun book but I was way too into critically analyzing it. Watched the movie w/ friends--

Doppoetry -- and we all pointed out all the references we got, it was a lot of fun.

I own some of King's more popular novels (a lot of them turned into pretty well-received films) so I am looking forward to reading him proper. It's nice seeing him continue to write for so many years, it's pretty impressive.
5mo
TieDyeDude You should check out #LosersClub

They are going to #buddyread his books chronologically by publication date starting in October. I'm not great at reading along with others, but I might join in on books I haven't read yet.
5mo
Doppoetry @TieDyeDude Thank you for letting me know! I am currently swamped with Reading so perhaps that is something for the future 5mo

5*/5 ⭐

Uno dei miei libri preferiti, che ho amato ugualmente (se non di più) ad ogni rilettura.

One of my favorite books, I still loved it equally (if not even more) each time I reread it.

"That truth is that monsters are real, and ghosts are real, too. They live inside us, and sometimes they win. That our better angels sometimes - often! - win instead, in spite of all odds, is another truth of The Shining."

iaietta Questo è piaciuto tantissimo anche a me 😍😍😍 7mo

I‘m with Stephen King on this one. The book is way better than the movie. In the book, Jack Torrence‘s journey into madness is eventual. He‘s a recovering alcoholic who is trying to better himself for his wife and son. The Overlook Hotel, where he is the caretaker for the winter months, has a different plan for him…and it‘s not good. #SeriesLove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

Jack Torrance‘s new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the old hotel, he‘ll have plenty of time to reconnect with his family and work on his writing. But as the harsh winter sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote, and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

I read it as a teenager in the ‘80s. This time I listened to the audio. I really liked it, but I do suspect it would have been creepier (and I would have been less likely to lose focus) if I‘d read the print. But, having already read the print, I wanted to try the audio. And there were still creepy parts, but it‘s pretty much impossible to get Jack Nicholson out of my head… or Shelley Duval or the actor who played Danny in the original movie.

CatLass007 I‘ve never seen the movie or the miniseries. But the book scared me nearly to death. It was very frightening. I read it in the winter when it first came out in paperback in the 70s. (edited) 12mo

In terms of movies I love for October, here are the ones I've watched multiple times, despite the fact they sometimes cause me to lose sleep 😬
I've included candies I love, but the reality is I love pretty much any candy, I'm not super fussy; the only exceptions are candy corn and black licorice.

CuriousG @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Hands down one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, especially as I'm slightly claustrophobic and the idea of just being in a cave is terrifying to me. I have no ide why I've tortured myself by watching this movie so many times. Lol 1y

Everyone knows about this haunted hotel, and likely has images of the movie seared into their brain. But, King‘s novel is superior. The tension and isolation when reading this is palpable. One feels Jack‘s sanity teetering with each weird event. Was Jack a bad man destined to destroy his family, or did the hotel prey upon a man with a weakness as it would upon any of us? Perhaps the scariest thing is knowing The Overlook could get into us too. 5⭐️

I read and watched The Shining for the first time (if you can believe it lol) last week. I have been trying to get back on the #losersclub train since Doctor Sleep is next. I've never been much of a re-reader. It's usually a one-and-done for me. Since I'm challenging myself to read all Stephen King books chronologically, I'm going to reread quite a few. This book holds up!! I couldn't put it down the first time and the second time...exactly the same. It's just the kind of creepy to get you yelling at the characters decisions, but not so scary you want to hurl the book across the room in fright. A favorite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
