Chris and Emily‘s lives are so intertwined from birth that it‘s no surprise that they become a couple in high school. Their future together seems predetermined until the night Emily dies by gun shot wound, tearing the lives of her loved ones apart. I liked this in that it was very readable, Picoult checks all the emotional boxes, and I love a dramatic courtroom scene but the more I think about it the more problematic it becomes. My #DoubleSpin for June. I looked through my shelves multiple times, thinking I had the paperback, only to discover that, no silly me, I have the ebook! Despite the darker subject (the MC is dying of cancer & reflecting on his life) while I'm going through some very stressful stuff, I decided to start reading it. I really tried, but OH did I really dislike this guy & how he treated people, particularly women (especially his wife). #HailTheBail

Blech - I stuck with the awkward and overly dense writing to see how it resolved and frankly, the end wasn‘t worth it. It was really difficult to reconcile the culprit with the person you were getting to know, it just didn‘t feel like they were the same person. And frankly, the characters all felt the exact same, I had a lot of trouble keeping them straight.

Wow, how lovely to read a compelling story about middle-aged people who are happy with their life choices! I was afraid I would feel let down or betrayed by the end -- literary fiction can really turn on you! -- but I was completely satisfied and crying happy tears.
