Marrow Island
Marrow Island | Alexis M. Smith
A new novel from a former bookseller, author of the acclaimedGlaciers, tracks a young womans return home to investigate a secretive community that has mysteriously rescued an island devastated by natural and chemical disaster and taken hold of one of her oldest friends. Twenty years ago Lucie Bowen left Marrow Island; along with her mother, she fled the aftermath of an earthquake that compromised the local refinery, killing her father and ravaging the islands environment. Now, Lucies childhood friend Kate is living within a mysterious group called Marrow Colony a community that claims to be ministering to the Earth. There have been remarkable changes to the land at the colonys homestead. Lucies experience as a journalist tells her theres more to Marrow Colony and their charismatic leader than they want her to know, and that the astonishing success of their environmental remediation has come at great cost to the colonists themselves. As she uncovers their secrets and methods, will Lucie endanger more than their mission? What price will she pay for the truth? In the company of Station Eleven and California, Marrow Island uses two tense natural disasters to ask tough questions about our choices large and small. A second novel from a bookseller whose sleeper-hit debut was praised by Karen Russell as haunted, joyful, beautiful, it promises to capture and captivate new readers even as it thrills Smith's many existing fans.

“…his only two books, Moby Dick and Lonesome Dove, a duo I‘ve taken to calling Lonesome Dick.”

⬆️ had me cracking up! But also sad… I‘ve never read Lonesome Dove, but can you imagine only having 2 books and one of them is Moby Dick? That‘s a tragedy.

I enjoyed this, but was expecting it to be a bit more of a thriller. It‘s a great story though, I‘d read more by this author.

Tamra I‘d be just fine with Lonesome Dove, but Moby Dick - no. 😜 7mo

A quick and beautiful read ... despite the crazy mushroom eco-cult. My big quibble is how unfinished it felt.

This was dreadful. I thought it was going to be about a cult. Turns out it was preachy environmental blahs blah blah the entire book. The main character doesn't shave her underarms and gets upset over killing a spider. Just really not for me lol. No plot. So boring. If I didnt listen on audio and speed it up 3x I would have DNFd it.

This book has just sucked me in. The writing is beautiful. I love the PNW, and her descriptions of the landscape have me missing it a lot this morning. Of course, the creepy colony aspect, the ecological issues and environmental questions raised, the sexy forest ranger and some murderous plot are keeping me pretty glued to this one, too! Accompanied by rain and jasmine green tea.

A moody and atmospheric environmental novel that captivated me from the beginning. Gorgeous prose, a touch of mystery, but really a book about a woman coming to terms with her past, reconnecting to the land and to herself.

I thought I was going to love this. The writing was really gorgeous, but ultimately it felt uneven. I had a hard time getting into it and I kept feeling like I had missed something. Maybe I read it too fast -- it's a slow burn and I didn't give myself a lot of time to absorb its subtleties.

Lucie left the Northwest islands after her father died in a refinery explosion from an earthquake. She returns to find Marrow Island, once uninhabitable, is home to a farming colony & visits to find closure & visit her former best friend who lives there. Lucie's visit becomes creepy when she discovers it's more like a cult & her neighbor goes missing. She tries to uncover how they all live there without becoming sick after the eco-disaster. 👇🏼

BookishFeminist Beautifully written, this novel is a slow burn full of intrigue, sadness, and longing. Smith infuses her writing with atmosphere & humanity while exploring ecology, nature, rebirth, mourning, & sacrifice. Slow to reach its climax, it's a story that requires patience but is well worth it in the end. 🍄🌿 #ecology #environment #queerauthors 7y

The writing was stellar in places, but not a lot happened until the last third of the book. The MC was annoying to me, just doing things to make more trouble for herself. I also often felt like the author's choices of when to give details and when not to give them was backwards. There were long descriptions of scenes that didn't seem to add to the story and then there were a lot of plot points that seemed to be left very vague.

1953, Lucie hears from her childhood friend Katie, who is living with a group on Marrow Island claiming they've made the island a safe place to live.

#TBR 😱📚

theahanner I don't normally read horror, but this sounds perfect for the Halloween season coming up, hope it's not too scary for me! Any similar ones you've read that you'd recommend? 7y

So it turns out I'm not allowed to bring my entire TBR stack on vacation with me 😩😩This is what I've managed to narrow it down to, plus serial reader and Hag Seed on my phone. #bookwormproblems #ineedchoices #darnyou50lblimit

Mehso-so

Stories about damaged women delving into the depths and daemons of their pasts are not quite my thing. So, this book didn't really grab me from the beginning. I stuck with it because the Pacific Northwest plays such a big part in the story, and I enjoyed that element. The ending was extremely unsatisfying and a bit abrupt, so nothing really got tied up.

I read Glaciers in August, and luckily enough this one arrived at the library not too much later! Love her writing so much! This is so beautiful; even though the story is so uncertain and chilling, it's also comforting in a way. Kind of makes me want to move to a cabin in the woods .... without the wildfires and earthquakes I guess.

BooksTeasAndBookishThings Welcome BACK to Litsy 😉🙌🎉 8y

What a story. Creative, unusual, and beautifully written. As a PNW native, her attention to the settings details (from the storied SanJuan Islands, to the majestic Cascade mountains and her forests, & my beloved rolling hills of the Palouse) was fantastic. Additionally, I haven't thought of the sisters of the Holy Names for years (& owe them gratitude for the excellent education they provided me).

AmyS Hey, I went to a Sisters of the Holy Names school, too! 8y
BookMusings I loved this book too 😀 8y
Lynnsoprano My only real experience in the PNW was a week on San Juan Island, and loved it! I have to add this to TBR, just because of that😄 8y
Jillsandypants I live in the PNW too, and the San Juan Islands are one of my favorite vacation spots. I'll have to read this! 8y

Road trip book, heading off across the state for some college football. My husband will tease me because I'll read until right before the kickoff. Sounds perfect to me, a book and my beloved Cougs playing on a sunny day😎

marixa How fun! 8y
Erinloves2read @Twocougs as in BYU Cougars playing in my hometown sunny state of Arizona? Enjoy!! 8y

A modern-day gothic tale, with a huge ecological backdrop. The imagery of the island is just astounding. The story is slow paced, taking it‘s time to explore the pain & love. What happens almost seems natural, leaving a dread and eerie sensation that this could happen to anyone.
My only complaint is the execution of Lucie‘s time on the island and the aftermath. The flashback technique did not do it justice.
Brilliant novel, overall!

Bette Had this home from the library but too many others pushed it back. Now I'll try again, thanks. ☺️ 8y
