The New York Times Questo romanzo mi piace talmente che me lo mangerei, se potessi farlo. Alice Sebold Uno di quei rari libri che ci ricorda che cosa significa veramente leggere. The New York Times Book Review Avvincente, delicato, toccante, divertente. The Washington Post Una deliziosa commedia di costume contemporanea. Entertainment Weekly

Six friends, acquaintances, and strangers gather to discuss Austen‘s collective works while navigating their own messy lives.

I don‘t say this often, but the movie was much better. The book bounced around from so many POVs and timelines that it got confusing at times. There was also a lot of time spent on the characters‘ childhoods that didn‘t seem to matter to the plot.

I‘ve first watched the film version of this novel, and was long overdue to read the book too. Admittedly, I didn‘t like it as much as the movie (a horrible thing to say, I know) but it was still a treat to read a book about book readers and their love of books (especially if it‘s Austen, with a lot of science fiction recommendations to boot). Also, who can‘t say no to a book club that offers peach margaritas?

Revisiting some old friends today. I feel like I've been in a slump with my last few books and decided I needed to check in on a favorite that I haven't read in some time. I'm only a few pages in but feeling better already. Don't you just love it when that happens? 🥰❤☕️📖

I‘ve run an in-person book club for almost 20 years. Initially, we sent out invites and announcements via email, then Evite. Are there other invitation platforms out there that folks can recommend? Thinking of an upgrade…

rwmg I've never heard of Evite before. What is the advantage over emails and text messages? 2y
plemmdog I started using as it gave a head count who was actually coming (on one occasion only one person showed up and the host had embarrassingly prepared a large spread). It also has a link to map apps, for directions. 2y
SRWCF Could you just send an invite through Outlook with a note to "please accept or decline so we know how much food to prepare"? I am an executive assistant and we use Outlook to set up all meetings, also more important meetings like those for our Board of Directors. It gives a headcount on the Tracking tab of who accepted, declined, or didn't respond, that way you know who to circle back with. 2y

I tried to love this book... I tried to like this book... I failed!!! I did not like this book. There was great potential for this book to be amazing, but it threw a lot of random information in that was rarely or never followed up on. I was hoping for a book about a book club, what I got was a book about five people explaining their connection to each other. I mean some people may enjoy this book, I was not one of them.

📚📚

marleed I agree. I read long after seeing the movie. I liked the movie better. 4y

Thank you to everyone who has joined so far, made suggestions, voted, chimed in on GR and slack, or just generally been enthusiastic about a JA group.😊

#PemberLittens is the winner for group name–thanks to @rubyslippersreads for a brilliant name!

The majority want to read Jane‘s novels in the order she wrote them, so we will start with S&S in May.

Feel free to share this post–new members always welcome!

Lots more info in the comments⬇️

sprainedbrain The plan is to spend 2 months on each JA novel, followed by another month reading Austenesque novels and watching film adaptations of that same novel, before moving on to the next. I figure we should wait until May to officially start, but of course you can start early or read other Jane/Austenesque stuff whenever! A reading schedule and some book-specific folders will be added to the GR group and the schedule will be shared on Litsy later today. 5y
sprainedbrain Please be mindful of spoilers, use the #PemberLittens tag on Litsy, use the heck out of the Goodreads group and Slack channels, and ENJOY! I‘m looking forward to this excellent long adventure with all of you. ❤️ 5y

I‘m overdue for a reread of Jane‘s novels, I have so many Austenesque books on my tbr, and I‘m always down for tv/movie adaptations.

We could start with the novels and branch out from there with suggestions from the group. People could jump in and out depending on their interest in the group‘s current focus.

Comment if you‘re interested and please share! Tagging friends who *might* be down for this (no pressure) but the more the merrier.

More⬇️

sprainedbrain As an example, we could read P&P, then some P&P-adjacent books, watch adaptations, discuss it all until we‘re sick of it, and move on to another book... with maybe book exchanges or swaps along the way? We could also read/learn about Austen‘s life, her time period and contemporaries, etc if desired.

If there is interest, I could do a sign-up for ideas, and we could start a Slack, Discord, or Goodreads group for further discussion. 💕

HOTPock3tt @sprainedbrain I‘m definitely interested!! ♥️ despite being such a mood reader 😆 I would like to follow along and join in at times! I would love a P&P Re-read and I‘m always looking for P&P adjacent books. Also I haven‘t read all her books and haven‘t seen a lot of adaptations either. So please add me to the list! 🤗 (edited) 5y
Eyelit Um, yes please! I‘ve way overdue for a reread as well and have so many Jane adjacent books, too!! 5y
ravenlee I‘ve never read any of the adjacent books, and I was just thinking yesterday that I need to reread at least one of the major novels. I think I‘ll have a go! (I‘m trusting you all to be less flighty than my previous JA book club 😆) 5y
mklong I am so in! Just downloaded the new one about Mary and am racing through book club commitments so I can read it... 5y
Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve been slowly rereading a few of her books. I‘ll certainly keep an eye on it! 5y
blank I'm in! 5y
AnneCecilie I would be interested to follow along and participate when the mood strikes 5y
tdrosebud I'm interested. I actually have 2 of hers that I haven't read. I'll join in as I can. 5y
bio_chem06 I want to do this. So many on my tbr list! 5y
batsy It's been awhile since I've re-read Austen too and she's one of my first bookish loves ❤️ Would love to join in when I can! 5y
mom2bugnbee Yessssssssss! I also have not read all of hers! 5y
wordslinger42 This sounds fun!! I love Jane Austen but still haven't read all her books, so this would be great 😊 5y
MaureenMc 🙋‍♀️ 5y
katy4peas Yes please! 5y
Amandajoy I‘ll probably dip in & out, but sounds like fun! I‘m in! (edited) 5y
Dcueto Yes please! 5y
Cuilin @sprainedbrain I love all things Austen! I could do with a reread. 5y
MeganAnn I‘d love to join in! P&P is the only Austen I‘ve read so far, but I keep meaning to pick up her other books. This would be a great way to do that! 5y
CrowCAH Yes, most certainly. Sign me up! @mabell would you like to join? 5y
wanderinglynn I‘m in! 5y
LiteraryinPA I‘d love to join! I‘ve read all of her novels but some more than others (P&P and S&S I‘ve read a lot!), plus a bunch of adaptations, but it would be fun to reread and discover new ones. This is the perfect time to revisit some comfort reads. 5y
kspenmoll This sounds great, especially because I have only read one of her books!!!! 5y
Biblionut I‘m in! I‘ve already been rereading her novels this year and would love to do with others. 😃 5y
rubyslippersreads This sounds like the perfect antidote to everything going on in the world today. I‘m delighted to join. 😊 Did you see this @batsy ? (edited) 5y
sprainedbrain @rubyslippersreads yay! I posted a sign-up link on my other post, in case you missed it. 😊 5y
rubyslippersreads @sprainedbrain Thanks for pointing it out; I missed it in my excitement. 😊 5y
mabell Love this idea! I‘m in the middle of a reread of Northanger right now actually. 😊 @CrowCAH 5y
quietjenn I'm very down for this! 5y
sprainedbrain @mabell @quietjenn I posted a sign up link on my second post, in case you didn‘t see that. I would love your input! ❤️ 5y
mabell @sprainedbrain I signed up! I didn‘t contribute much insightful - I‘m looking forward to seeing what the clever minds come up with! 😂 5y
WhatWouldJaneDo I am super into this idea! 5y
sprainedbrain @WhatWouldJaneDo I posted a link to the sign-up on my more recent post! I‘d love it if you filled it out. 😃 5y
WhatWouldJaneDo @sprainedbrain just did! Thanks for organizing! 5y
LeahBergen Ooooo, this sounds fun! I actually have several Austen-esque reads on my TBR that I‘d like to get to (and some nonfiction reads, too)! 5y
LeahBergen @mklong I have that one on order! 👍🏻 5y
mklong @leahbergen Awesome. I‘m thinking that you will have managed to get a prettier edition than mine! 5y
BennettBookworm I‘m so game! 5y
hilded Great idea! I am interested in following along, and jump in when I have the time :) 5y
LeahBergen @mklong 😆 Oh, I doubt it. I have the UK cover coming (I think? 🤔). Is the US one different? I‘ll check. 5y
janeycanuck I‘m interested! 5y
sprainedbrain @janeycanuck see my most recent post about the club for the sign-up link, as well as a link to the GR group and Slack channel. 😃 5y

rockpools I only forgot to pick up Twiglets just now. Knew there was something important 😋. Believe it or not, I‘m off to the gym for a ‘journey appointment‘ (whatever the heck that is). THEN I‘m partying 🥳 🎉 5y
julesG @RachelO Enjoy the journey appointment and the party afterwards. I've done more DIY today, in between feeding the poor teenager with braces and loose teeth, and diarrhoea. 😒 5y
rockpools @julesG urrgh! Think you‘ve both earned a party this evening- that sounds nasty. Hope they‘re feeling better soon. 5y

julesG @RachelO Thanks. We'll probably watch a film tonight. It's Film Friday. 5y
Lynnsoprano Those look yummy. We left home early this morning for our son‘s, and I forgot my snacks 😜 Hope your teen is feeling better soon. 5y
julesG @Lynnsoprano Thanks! He's on the mend, I think. 5y
gradcat Ok, what exactly is #LitsyPartyofOne? I think I‘m missing out on something.... By the way, Julia: is your TBR list up to date on Litsy? ♥️ (edited) 5y
julesG @gradcat Litsy Party of One is like a weekend readathon. You're celebrating being an introvert and reading. My TBR is relatively up-to-date, I'll go through it again. Give me an hour. 😉 5y
gradcat @julesG Thank you, Julia!! 😘 Oh, and—can anyone just “do” #LitsyPartyofOne? (edited) 5y
julesG @gradcat sure. Anyone can join in. Readers love to party. 😁 5y
gradcat Thanks again! 😉 5y
julesG @gradcat Just in case, the TBR is up-to-date. After my big purge at the end of last year it's in much better shape. 😬 5y
gradcat @julesG Thanks for the update, Julia—good to know! I had the same thing happen right on New Year‘s Day...great specials on books were offered at Amazon, and I couldn‘t resist! 🤣♥️ 5y

JacqMac Yes. And sometimes it‘s because I have, but I forgot. 😂 5y

We have a severe case of the Mondays. The neighbours had a party into the very wee hours of the night.

#12Littens12BooksRound2 - with fewer Littens and fewer books 😁

#ShadowCat even had his front paws on me a moment ago. Something he rarely does.

Cathythoughts Oh no !!! Monday‘s 🙄 5y
tvscag He looks like my Midnight! 😄 5y
julesG @tvscag Shadow's a black feral foundling who happens to have a bit of Bombay DNA. My vet said it's a pity I had him and his adoptive sister spayed/neutered. #GhostCat is a Siamese with some Abyssinian mixed in. They might have made wonderful kittens. 😉 5y

Alliterati How's the book reading? =] I saw the movie a few times and have considered reading the book, but haven't gotten around to it, yet.

Also, adorable kitty! =]
5y
julesG @Alliterati Thanks! Dare I say it? I think the film is better. 😶 5y

Grigg was a neat, dark-haired man in his early forties. The first thing you noticed about him was his eyelashes, which were very long and thick. We imagined a lifetime of aunts regretting the waste of those lashes in the face of a boy. We‘d known Jocelyn long enough to wonder whom Grigg was intended for. Grigg was too young for some of us, too old for the rest. His #inclusion in the club was mystifying. #QuotsyFeb20 #TheMovieIsBetter

Mehso-so

Dang, I liked the movie better. There was just some cringe-worthy semantics in this one. I love the whole bookclub setting, but I wasn‘t as invested in the characters as much as I need to be in order to recall their particulars in another month. That‘s pretty much what defines a meh for me.

Scochrane26 That‘s how I felt, too. Maybe I should watch the movie. 5y
marleed @Scochrane26 While I was reading I realized the characters weren‘t doing it for me and that what I reading would not be remembered. Then I just went through the motion of reading. But it‘s okay because these experiences help me appreciate the stories I get lost in! 5y
Graciouswarriorprincess I liked the movie better as well.

Decent read. Though in this case the movie may trump it as the cast in that is kinda brilliant.
#letterj

LeeRHarry Definitely think the movie is better - one of my faves that I have rewatched many times 😊 5y
Smarkies @LeeRHarry I have started watching it again as the book prompted me to do so. The plot is a lot more concise and the actors really do bring the characters to life. 5y

Thought I would have a hard time reading for 8-10 hrs today, but I ended up with 10.5 (14.5 total). I may not get as much in tomorrow because of youth group, etc. Saturdays are usually my excessive reading day if I‘m free. Also stayed up too late. #24b4monday @ReadingMermaid @Andrew65 @jb72 #summersendreadathon @Clwojick
Finished this one, took me awhile to get characters straight & get into it. Like the Jane Austen theme. Book 2 for readathons.

Andrew65 Doing great and still 2 days to go. 👏👏👏 5y

Such a fun movie to spend the afternoon with. ? @ all y'all with the #BookFitnessChallenge #bfc - see, I'm resting/recovering from the surgery! ? I may or may not have put "watch a movie" on my to do list for the day, just to force myself to rest... ? My #BookBuyingBan is going really well. 🙈

Ordered some second hand DVDs and looked for books for my #CupidGoesPostal match.

Found Six of Crows in the local Oxfam shop. Hardcover for 2 Euros. Couldn't leave it on the shelf.
