The Crossing Places: A Ruth Galloway Investigation 1
The Crossing Places: A Ruth Galloway Investigation 1 | Elly Griffiths
119 posts | 130 read | 151 to read
Dr Ruth Galloway is in her late 30s. When shes not digging up bones or other ancient objects, she lectures at a university in Norfolk. She lives, alone but happily so, in a bleak, marshy area called Saltmarsh overlooking the sea and Norfolks vast skies with her cats and Radio 4 for company. Shes a salty character - quirky. When a childs bones are found in the marshes, near a dig that Ruth and her former boyfriend Peter worked on ten years before, Ruth is called upon to date them. They turn out to be bronze-age bones and DCI Harry Nelson, who called on Ruth for help, is disappointed. He had hoped they would be the bones of a child called Lucy whos been missing, presumed dead, for ten years. He has been getting letters about her ever since - odd letters with references to ritual and sacrifice, and including quotes from the Bible and Shakespeare. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson gets another letter - like the ones about Lucy. Is it the same killer? Is it a ritual murder, linked in some way to the site near Ruths remote home? Then one of Ruths cats is killed and clearly shes in danger from a killer who knows that her expert knowledge is being used to help the police with their enquiries ...

‘Please . . .‘ Ruth gestures to the chairs stacked by the door. Phil makes a great #performance of giving Nelson his chair first, practically wiping away the dust with his jumper sleeve.

It's been years since I learned how to cross-stitch, but I've started making this rug/mat to put under the 🎄. And I've been doing some #audiostitching and started a new series 📚
Anybody else making any crafts for Christmas?

julesG 😍 I'm knitting. My kids want fingerless mittens. I might make a new hat for myself. Then my daughter asked for a sweater dress, so I'll sew one. And my son would like a new pencil case. I might just be able to get it all done by Christmas. 2w
Crazeedi So pretty! I've done all kinds of crafts over the years, I recently made some bookmarks, but I need to get out some of my projects again 2w
BookNAround I generally make Christmas ornaments so my kids will have a mom produced starter set when they have their own trees. And since my oldest has his own apartment now, I guess it‘s time to give him his ornaments! 2w

ravenlee I finished two afghans for my nephew and niece, who outgrew their baby blankets. Except I need to do the actual finishing so I can send them off. 2w
tracey38 This is so nice! I wish I was able to get into crafting again but I'm too exhausted after work! 2w
inthegreensandblues I have been audio knitting. 😊🧶 2w
Marina_h @julesG You sound busy 😊 but it must be great your kids has wishes for things you can make. 2w
Marina_h @Crazeedi I'm trying different crafts as well. I always see so many things on Pinterest I would to try and make myself, but we don't really have room for too many projects. Bookmarks sounds like a good idea. 2w
Marina_h @BookNAround I love that! 😍 what a great thing to make for your kids. It just means so much more when you've made them yourself! 2w
Marina_h @ravenlee the finish is always the hard part, I think 🙈 I crochet and I started on this Christmas elf but I still need to sew all the parts together. 2w
Marina_h @tracey38 I know that feeling. Right now I feel like I'm relaxing better while making crafts than if I sit with my tablet but I know January will probably feel different! 2w
Crazeedi @Marina_h I have a craft room, and I have lots of supplies!! 2w
Marina_h @Crazeedi I would love that 😍 We actually have a spare room we haven't decided what to do with so I just need to convince Hubby 😁 2w
Crazeedi @Marina_h just tell him that way the rest of the house wont be cluttered! 2w

As a mystery, I enjoyed the story—great setting, likable main characters, & a solid plot with some good twists & turns. As a mystery involving a forensic archaeologist who becomes something of an amateur sleuth by the end, it was a bit annoying as almost everything written about archaeology and how it‘s done was wrong. Annoyance aside, I enjoyed the mystery & may well read more in the series in the future.

While I was in Barnes and Noble this weekend, a lady walked up next to me, picked this book up off the shelf near me (not what I was looking at) and said "This series is great. You should read this." Then she walked away. So, of course I bought it. And she was right. I'm 130 pages in, and it's terrific so far. So, thanks random reader.

This was a promising start to the series and I enjoyed it! Though I think I was more taken by Ruth and Griffiths' prose than the mystery itself. Still, a solid (albeit a bit rushed) conclusion to a missing child case with an archaeological spin and a cool/creepy setting. I'll check out the others in the series for sure.

Annl @rretzler My friends laugh at me because I am never up to date with series of books, especially English mysteries! They are my go to comfort books and I keep a large number of them for when I need those old friends! 8mo
See All 10 Comments
rretzler I‘m a huge fan of English mysteries too - they are also my comfort books. There are so many that it‘s hard to keep up with them all! I love Golden Age mysteries, but also the more modern ones. Have you read Peter Lovesey, Martha Grimes or Elizabeth George? They are a few of my more modern favorites, along with Elly Griffiths and Ann Cleeves. 8mo
Annl @rretzler Elizabeth George is my all time favorite. I am 2 books past the book with the awful event (you probably know to what I am referring). I have the last Dalgliesh to read from P.D. James. I have not heard of Peter Lovesey. I will have to check him out. I am presently reading Murder in G Major which I am enjoying, set in Ireland. 8mo
rretzler Yes, I do know the awful event - I refuse to read the next book in George‘s series, but I‘m caught up with it otherwise. Love PD James as well. I‘ve not heard of Murder in G Major, I‘ll have to check it out. Always good to compare notes with a fellow English mystery lover! 8mo
Annl @rretzler I also did not read the next book after the event in the George series. George gave an interview about why she did what she did? Not sure I agree? 8mo
Annl @rretzler Barbara is my favorite character in that series! 8mo
rretzler I also read it and while I guess I can see her point, I don‘t agree with it either. 8mo

Solid, highly atmospheric British crime. The Crossing Places is well-paced, and Griffith‘s characters deviate enough from convention to make this story both comfortingly recognisable, and original. A solid mystery, whose signposts were just a fraction too obvious for me.

I did enjoy this book but it didn‘t flow as well as I would have liked. The story was interesting but the characters lacked something for me. I found that I really didn‘t care what happened to them and it became a bit of a chore to read. The ending made up for some of that lackluster feeling but even then wasn‘t a “Quick, I need to get back to my book” urge.

Elly Griffiths has given us great characters with past affairs, lovers, friends and even a Druid, to build a great background. The chemistry between Ruth and Nelson is palpable and there‘s tension & some dark, scary places on the Saltmarsh. Ruth is a grown up, a real woman.....not all thin, elegant and groomed within an inch of her life. She is a little plump and lives in wellies and a mac, feels like a real person. A new series to enjoy.

I didn't bail on it, but it didn't work for me. I found the mystery not that mysterious, and didn't care much about the protagonist, Ruth. It will sound harsh, but Ruth had low confidence in herself and the author didn't give me enough reason to have confidence in Ruth, either. The pacing was even, but too slow for my taste, never really reaching a climax that I found interesting.

I have a new mystery series to read! This was the first book in the Ruth Galloway series. Ruth is a 40-year-old archaeologist who lives near an isolated marshland with her cats. Her specialty is bones, and she gets called in to consult with the police when bones are discovered. I really connected with her, and I want to know what else happens to her. Loved the mystery element as well. The secondary characters all worked. Excited to read number 2!

A fun new-to-me mystery series. The protagonist is an archaeology professor in Norfolk, and it seems like it's going to be the kind of series where she stumbles upon murders. It's set in the UK, which I always love for a cozy series. Light and easy to read, well-written, and a relatable protagonist - what else can you ask for?

Tove_Reads Why have I never heard of her? Can anyone explain? 😱😜 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Too many authors out there, I only found out about her by picking up a book from a charity shop. Definitely worth reading. 2y
Tove_Reads Requested the e-library to get the first one - let‘s see! I agree, so many out there, but from time to time I feel like I‘ve ran out of authors, and then I discover 10 more! Only discovered Bolton and Boyne two years ago, and they are both in my top ten all-timers! 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Bolton is one I want to get to but have yet to make it! I too loved John Boyne although only read two of his books this year. You also want everyone to enjoy the books you enjoy, so hope you enjoy Elly Griffiths when you try her! (edited) 2y

Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Okay, she has just accelerated up my list. 😂 Thanks 👍 2y
Tove_Reads I am on my way to read everything written by Boyne - probably including shopping lists. Totally ready to marry him just to get access to his brain. I doubt his husband would be too excited about that though... 2y
Tove_Reads 👍🏽I just bought her books for a few quid from awesomebooks. Highly recommended! I read Sacrifice in one sitting - was impossible to go to sleep, just saying. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 😂😂😂 I have loved the two I have read so would definitely read everything by him! (edited) 2y
Tove_Reads I love it that I can find new authors almost daily. I tend to read books in English, and there are so many authors I would never hear of if I would only read translated books. Sadly many great ones have been ignored when it comes to translation. Btw, have you read Library of Gold by Gayle Lynds? 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I know the author due to her writing with Robert Ludlum but never read any of her work, will stack Library of Gold, thanks for the recommendation. 👏 (edited) 2y
Andrew65 Agree about the number of new authors, so many I want to read (non-English authors) but can also be difficult to get hold of them all, e.g. Nele Neuhaus (edited) 2y
Tove_Reads Library of Gold blew my mind. I was like “Dan Brown, who? Give me Gayle Lynds”. Then I read somewhere that she‘s the intelligent choice - instead of Dan Brown. (edited) 2y
Tove_Reads Eagerly waiting for Het Smelt by Lize Spit to be translated. I believe it‘s on the way. Supposed to be a superb book! The Melting, I presume. My Flemish is not good enough to read the book. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I enjoyed Dan Brown‘s Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons but been very disappointed by the last couple (not read Origin). Definitely some better authors in this sub genre including James Rollins, James Twining, Matthew Reilly, Scott Mariani, Chris Kuzneski, Simon Toyne, James Becker, Boyd Morrison. Okay best stop! I will try Gayle Lynds. 🙌 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads My Flemish is non-existent. I‘d have to put one sentence at a time into google translate! 😂 2y
Tove_Reads I still have quite a few to read, but Bolton and Gayle surpasses everyone else! I hope Taavi Soininvaara will be translated. Pekka Hiltunen is good, and you can find them in English! Have you read Glenn Cooper? Paul Sussman? Seriously, Sussman is da man!! 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads How did I forget Glenn Cooper. The first book in the Will Piper Series is one of my favourite books. 2y
Tove_Reads Cold Courage by Pekka Hiltunen. The Lost Army of Cambyses by Paul Sussman. 2y
Tove_Reads Yup, loved Library of the Dead. Have not yet read the other two in the series. Must read them soon! 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Not Read Paul Sussman but do know his books. Another I need to get to. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Have Read and loved the whole trilogy but first one is my favourite partially because it is how I discovered him. 2y
Tove_Reads Mind blowing. The first two in the series are amazing! The third one is really good, but different. A bit like the Kingsbridge series. Third one is good, but doesn‘t quite fit in with the first two. 2y
Tove_Reads Have you read C.J. Sansom? Read the first one. It was good, but not great. I will read the second one to see if it gets better. Chunksters, and historical. 2y
Tove_Reads Another interesting one is The Phaeton Report. Thought I wouldn‘t like it, but I did, and a lot! Different! People have unfortunately not heard of this book. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Ditto re C J Sansom, Read first one and good but not great. I do own book 2 and 3 and do want to get back to them because receive great press! 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Not aware of The Phaeton Report, But does sound right up my street! 2y
Tove_Reads Should we go for Dark Fire one day? To see if Sansom becomes great. 2y
Tove_Reads Btw, Pekka Hiltunen‘s Cold Courage for Qa.69 at awesome books.com. Free UK delivery. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Dark Fire sounds like a plan for a bit later on to get us moving on it again. At the moment my reading has taken a bit of a hit due to work demands. In a couple of weeks should have more reading time. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I will check Cold Courage out, thanks. 👏 2y
Tove_Reads All in good time. I have 30 books on my book table in the bedroom. The Sunne in Splendor, And ladies of the club, The game of kings are all staring at me disappointingly. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I can relate to that, Sarum keeps looking at me with great disdain, along with Spartacus Rebellion, Ireland Awakening, One By One, Bear Town, A Wise Man‘s Fear, Devil‘s Brood, Lilian Boxfish Takes A Walk, Natchez Burning, Protect and Defend, amongst many others! Work is just so intense at the moment and taking up a lot of my leisure time! 2y
Tove_Reads Finished Sarum. Was a quick read. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Well done because that is one big book! A few group Reads are stopping me getting to it at the moment. 2y
Tove_Reads Will start reading Cathedral of the Sea tomorrow. 2y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Hope you enjoy with back with the cathedrals. Look forward to your thoughts. 2y

Pickpick

Even though I had guessed the villain in this one, it was still highly engrossing with its eerie archeological element, and I was impressed with how well the author turned the starkly harsh, isolated beauty of the Saltmarsh into a stand-alone character of its own. Dr. Ruth Galloway is a character that lingers with you, and I‘m looking forward to reading more about her! 4/5⭐️ Thanks to @eanderson for introducing me to this series! 😊

MicheleinPhilly Love this series! 2y

robinb @Andrew65 I thought I remembered that you did...me too! 😊👍🙌 2y
Andrew65 @robinb The relationships are one of the best things in this series, and love Cathbad who comes even more into his own in later books. Wait till you get to the one in Blackpool and find out What Cathbad gets up to in that one. #teaser (edited) 2y
SandyW You made it sound interesting enough that I was going to add it to my TBR, but it's already there. 😳 2y
robinb @Andrew65 That‘s one of the things I love most about series...watching the character development. ❤️ I‘m just happy to see there are currently 9 of them...YAY!!! 😊👍 2y
