kwmg40 This story felt pretty dark for a Discworld novel, even if it did contain some very funny scenes. Two aspects that I liked very much: the continuing character development of Vimes and the hilarious and intriguing Dis-organiser. 4d

julesG Yes, the novel was darker than what we've seen so far, but it can't all be sunshine and rainbows. Not even on Discworld. I think Pratchett used the Watch novels deliberately to show the darker side of life. 4d

willaful I think this was one of his more ambitious books and it's not entirely successful. But it's full of fantastic gut-punch scenes, as well as laughs. 3d

julesG @willaful There's a lot packed into the story. This time round I noticed a lot of small things connected to history (wars, border disputes, fishing rights squabbles,...) that I didn't notice upon my first read or didn't know about back then, which make more sense to me and made the novel feel less 'unsuccessfully ambitious'. 3d

The Watch is baffled by a pair of mysterious murders & the poisoning of the Patrician. It will take all of them working together along w/ a new hire to solve everything.

This is 1 of my favorites. The two separate mysteries are fascinating, I love all the characters (Angua my beloved), Dorfl & the golems & the power of choosing, & Vimes always satisfies my deeply buried vengeful side @ the end. I forgot how much that last scene hits me.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗
