So I am here... *pencil*. And while I have plenty of reading material I doubt I'll be able to concentrate on books until the worst is over...
My oldest #bookhaul pic is from 3 years ago from the #Rockcliffebookfair, which used to be one of my favourite events. Last time I went it had gotten too big and was a bit of a nightmare to navigate. 😞
I‘ve only read 4/11... tried 2 others but it just wasn‘t the right time for those guys. All the 📚 that I haven‘t read are still on my radar though. This challenge is a great reminder for me to get back to them!

Vacation DNF. 😭😣 We cut our trip to Dauphin Island, AL two days short because the road in front of the house we rented flooded due to abnormal tides. It‘s only going to get worse with higher winds and storm surges. Thanks a lot, #HurricaneMichael. What an a-hole.

We made it back to Wilmington! Our house is miraculously unscathed (unless you count the apparent cyclonic activity that seems to have wrecked my children‘s bedrooms) and I am SO RELIEVED! Many of the homes in our neighborhood sustained serious flood damage and the aftermath of ruined carpets and furniture piled up at the roadside is heartbreaking to see. But, I‘m glad to be home with a roof over my head. Thanks for all the well wishes. ♥️
Well, we are still evacuated. It‘s so hard to watch from a distance as my city begins to rebuild, as the deeply-rooted racial and socioeconomic injustice comes to the forefront, as people wait indefinitely for inadequate supplies. I am glad to be safe, but my spirit wants to help. Nearly all roadways in are still flooded and gas & food are limited—we are advised not to return yet. So we wait, unsettled & impatient, but ready for the work ahead.
This is the scene at evacuation station, but back home our city is under water. What we know is that there is no access in or out of Wilmington or our neighborhood, but so far, our house is okay. I‘m not sure how long it will be before we can get back home, but I‘m thankful to have food, water, and shelter. My heart breaks to think about the devastation and the people who‘ve lost so much. It‘s going to be a long recovery.
This is how I spent my afternoon and evening: volunteering at the Red Cross shelter that opened at a nearby high school. On the right, my location. 😳
Not a lot of reading happened today, but getting out and helping others did keep my mind off the potential storm impacts to where I live!

This is the kids‘ hurricane prep basket. Dad bought them some new books just for the occasion. Because apparently you can move AWAY from South Florida and still manage to seat yourselves in the direct path of a major storm. 🤦♀️

Hurricane Lane update with NOAA pic from Tuesday. I think the look into the eye of the storm is cool. Not much action here yet besides wind gusts but rain & winds will pick up today. It has weakened to category 2 & mostly maintained its track which is good. On the bad side it's very slow at 5 mph which means it lingers-prolonging those conditions. Aloha, Mahalo to the many of you checking in with me with Hurricane Lane poised to reach Oahu in the early morning hours tonight. I'm at work (just started a new job last week) & prepping the office for the storm. We will hopefully be headed home in a couple of hours (about 2:PM here) where Max🐱& I will be hanging out & hoping for the best. They say at a minimum we'll get smacked hard with torrential rain & high winds. I'll update as I can.🙏🏻💜

Stephen King tweeted about our island today. We still experience rolling blackouts—in part because Whitefish did not, in fact, fix the one power line they were ultimately paid to fix. It is estimated that Vieques and Culebra will not have electricity fir two more years.
Fixin‘ to leave Houston after a week of hurricane relief. The ice storm set us back a little, but we got a lot done. Much paint was painted, much food was eaten, much insulation was installed. There‘s still lots more to do if you‘re interested!
We have power! We cried! #Tricky can‘t believe it either!
Day 92 #afterMaria — finally, signs of progress on the power front. A crew is working on the power line next door! We‘ve had power for only 12 hours since Sept 6 when Irma hit. Fingers crossed!

Day 56 #AfterMaria and Chili‘s in Dorado, Puerto Rico requires payment only in cash or money order. Yes, money order. Not check, MONEY ORDER. (That‘s because PR consumer protection law requires businesses to have 2 valid methods of payment... way to stick to the letter while killing the spirit of the law, Chili‘s)
Day 44 #AfterMaria — tutoring after a long day. Still no power. Debris was supposed to be picked up today by the municipal government; fingers crossed that the street will be clear when we get home!

Day 22 #AfterMaria -- heading home through Avenue lined with broken trees and debris, hoping the propane gas people actually come tonight, so we can turn on the generator. Sigh.
Update: NO JOY on water bottles. They had run out. Costco doesn't know when the next shipment will be in. We start working full-time tomorrow, so we can't make lines anyway. Sigh. 😞

Day 20 #AfterMaria - the new normal: waiting in line in hopes of being able to buy bottled water
Day 19 #AfterMaria - it's hard not to get disheartened at the lack of progress. 88% still without power, 45% without water. Supermarkets and pharmacies are understocked, even Walgreens. Debris still litters the sides of roads. Early morning the San Juan power plant shut down again, taking what little power Metro area hospitals, shopping centers, and the airport were receiving. I can't imagine what the mountain towns are going through. It's bad.
Day 14 - #AfterMaria - First day back at work. Here's a view of a fallen power distribution line, with the pole resting against the highway. Most of the vegetation is stripped bare and broken down, an eerie sight.
Our classrooms are intact, no water damage! @WanderingBookaneer @Figgy @gibblr and I are happy about that!
We're also glad to report that the ⛽️ situation seems to have stabilized. We filled up our tank in 10 minutes!

Day 13 #AfterMaria - Woke up to the heartbreaking news of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. 😞And to news that 9 million American children lost their healthcare because Congress did not reauthorize CHIP by Sept 30, while the House is set to pass a law revoking the ban on gun silencers.
This is a call to arms, dear Littens, from those of us who have no voice, no representation - Tell Congress: Save Puerto Rico, save CHIP, save lives w/ gun control.

Success at Costco! We cried when we got our ration of 2 packs of bottled water. We also found litter for the 11 litter boxes. This took 4 hours.
We felt emboldened and dared to try PetSmart. After a short wait in line to get in, we were lucky that we found more cat food and litter, and that after a few tries, the ATM system was working, so we could pay.
All in all, a successful day in hurricane-ravaged 🇵🇷-- thanks for the support, Littens! 💜

Starting Day 9 #AfterMaria in the Costco parking lot, waiting in line for 3 hours in the hopes that we'll be able to buy bottled water. It's our second try.
Emergency situation continues. No power, limited water. Shortages of diesel, gas, food, bottled water, medicine. Long multi-hour lines for everything. Curfew.
The sick are dying, even in hospitals. It's bad.
