Aaron is smart, charming and over-privileged. Iskinder, his new college roommate, comes from a middle-class immigrant family and is under-connected. Aaron takes Iskinder under his wing, sharing his world of favors and fortune. But the safe haven of college only lasts so long. After a chance encounter with an accused felon sets off a chain of events that puts Aaron's life at risk, the two men are forced to rethink the meaning of friendship. THE RECOMMENDATION is a bold and candid look at modern friendship from an exciting new theatrical voice.

DebinHawaii Thank you! 🤗 Another time period that I don‘t have much background in so I appreciate the resources & recommendations as well as the push out of my historical fiction comfort zones! 😉 1y
Cuilin @DebinHawaii you‘re welcome, I hoped that using a broad prompt, there would be many choices but sometimes too much choice is challenging 😆 1y

I need some recommendations! I'm in a slump, I feel like I've read every book that fits my taste although I know that's not possible. Basically, I have read every new release thriller that is not a crime thriller or police procedural (I hate detective novels that extend into huge series). I'm not only a fan of thrillers but my taste is in domestic or psychological in that genre. I would love to get suggestions for Literary Fiction as well. Help!!

BookLineNSinker The background of this photo is from my art journal and my first try at neurographic art! 🎨 #literary #litsycrafter #artjournal 2y
brittanyreads Hi! I recently was in a slump, too. I picked up this thriller and so far (I'm halfway through) it's been good! Have you read it yet? 2y
brittanyreads Also, I haven't gotten around to starting them yet...but I hear amazing things about Freida McFadden's books. I believe they are mostly standalones. 2y
See All 15 Comments
Enchanted_Bibliophile Currently reading this one (about 60%). It's pretty entertaining… 2y
dabbe @BookLineNSinker Beautifully done. 🤗 2y
dylanisreading How do you feel about horror thrillers with supernatural elements? I just read and loved Malice House by Megan Shepherd. 2y
BookLineNSinker @dylanisreading I'm open to exploring that. I'll definitely be putting on my TBR list! Thank you for the rec! 2y
BookLineNSinker @dabbe thank you so much! I just finished an optical illusion line drawing today that I'll post in another thread! I haven't really posted my art work on here before but it makes for a cute background! 2y
BookLineNSinker @Enchanted_Bibliophile I think I read that one and enjoyed it! 2y
Bette Wake by Shelley Burr was good, Long stretch of bad days - McGinnis, Missing Clarissa - Jones 2y
Chelsea.Poole Have you read anything by Jennifer Hillier? She‘s my favorite thriller author. 2y
Chelsea.Poole I also really liked this one 2y
Chelsea.Poole Literary fiction, character driven, and a favorite 2y
BookLineNSinker @Chelsea.Poole thank you!!! All of these sound great! I like Hillier Aldi but I've only read her newest book so far! These are am great suggestive from everyone!! @Bette did you like Long Stretch of Bad Days I think I have that in my Libby library 2y
Bette Hey! I really did like Long Stretch…the author puts two very different girls together (one has a mouth on her…but her outbursts usually had me laughing, I don‘t mind swearing) so I found it very engaging. Good characters, interesting mystery, I tend to like cold cases. 2y

We all know I love a good challenge, so why not add one more to my plate in 2023?!

Please give me those recommendations!! (Either tag them or comment them below. And I am willing to go a couple rounds, so the more recommendations the better!)

I love thrillers, historical fiction, mysteries, romances, dark romances, and YA.

💙💙💙

Help friends! I‘m really feeling like some cute autumnal romance atm but all the recommendations I‘m finding irl and online are for summer romances. I need baking and big sweaters and crunchy leaves. Does anyone have any recs from last year or know of any new autumn romances that just came out? I have no preferences in terms of genders, sexualities or levels of spiciness, I just need cuddly jumpers.

JessClark78 I have a couple set up on my Kindle to read in autumn. Autumn at Apple Hill by Angie Ellington. Pumpkin Everything and Maple Sugar Crush are a two book romance series by Beth Labonte. 2y
Emilymdxn @JessClark78 thanks!!! I just got pumpkin everything on kindle it looks so good 2y

Good morning littens! I was wondering if any of you use a Kindle Oasis and what your experience is with it. I have an almost 6 year old Paperwhite (7th gen) that is starting to get glitchy and I was thinking it might be time for an upgrade.

HOTPock3tt I have a kindle oasis. I LOVE it more than the paperwhite . The lighting is MUCH better than my old paperwhite with different settings softer on the eyes. It has a button to go from page to page (but you can still do touch screen if you want) also mine has a slightly bigger screen but a smaller body... so not a lot of that black edge... it‘s mostly screen but still manages to be smaller than the paperwhite. Hope that helps @MatchlessMarie (edited) 4y

So when you have hundreds of miles to go in weather like this, which audiobook do you recommend listening to? I‘m home safe & sound, asking for the next adventurous drive, lol. ❄️

(grumble) I‘ve been obsessively checking my myTBR account for my next set of recommendations. I already have The Map of Salt and Stars on my shelf and planned to read it next year for #ReadingAsia2021 (Syria). The other two look really good, but here‘s my grumble. I have another new bibliologist - no warning, no explanation, and I‘m left worrying that I did something or said something that made my last (3) bibliogist dump me. 😭😭 *sigh*

Reggie Maybe they just do it to keep things fresh for everyone. 4y
DGRachel @Reggie Maybe, but I miss the relationship that forms when you have the same Bibliologist for more than a year. That person learns more about you through feedback. Today‘s recommendations don‘t seem to have taken past feedback into account. It makes me sad. 4y
Reggie I‘m sorry. Boooooo to them. 4y
Amandajoy It could also be those bibliologists got new jobs and left. That stinks though. 4y
Hooked_on_books I suspect it has nothing to do with you personally, but I do think it‘s an excellent idea to give them this feedback. I would hope they would want to make the service as good as possible for those using it and would welcome this kind of constructive feedback. For what it‘s worth, The Golden Thread is quite interesting if a little repetitive. The core story in it is fascinating. 4y

Okay #TeamSlaughter! I have a question for you. Can anyone recommend a horror or thriller/suspense of any age group that has a setting at a circus or has creepy clowns? I have a few prompts I‘d like to cross off, but I‘m not having any luck finding anything on CloudLibrary.

The only ones I know about are It, and Clown in a Cornfield, but my library doesn‘t have them available. Thanks!

ravenlee Is Something Wicked This Way Comes set in a circus? Or carnival? 4y

Littens, I need your help! I‘ve been in an audio drought for too long, and I need some recommendations. I‘m looking for a deep dive into all kinds of things. The books above are some I‘ve enjoyed a lot, and anything resembling those would be great, but I‘m open!

Also, if there exists a book that is as 🍌👖 as Tiger King on Netflix, pleeeeease let me know 😂

I know @Cinfhen is hitting the audios hard at the moment, so maybe you have some ideas?

Hooked_on_books This one is a really interesting look at why we sometimes misread strangers with devastating consequences. I liked it a lot. 5y
Hooked_on_books This is a look at disappearances and murders of primarily native women over decades along a certain street of lonely highway in Canada. 5y

SamAnne I loved Say Nothing: Murder, Mystery and Memory in Northern Ireland! And agree with Catch and Kill! 5y
Chelsea.Poole I was also going to suggest Catch and Kill! @Erinreadsthebooks @SamAnne 😊 5y
Chelsea.Poole Not ? ? in the same way Tiger King is, but I kept thinking "how in the world is this happening!?" Sad and so crazy. 5y
Billypar This one - it's incredible: best non-fiction I've read this year (maybe ever?) and the audio version is excellent. One of those stories you can't believe is real. And the less you know going in, the better. 5y
AvidReader25 I second Talking to Strangers and would also add Say Nothing, Furious Hours, From Scratch, Being Mortal and 5y
Gezemice If you have not read it yet, the best ever audiobook is Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. However my best listen this year was 5y
Gezemice @Karkar I concur, Killersof The Flower Moon is excellent 5y
Gezemice I also recommend Midnight in Chernobyl - but not sure if you are up for a disaster book nowadays 5y
Megabooks Anything by Rebecca Solnit 5y
Cinfhen Oh, you got LOADS of good recommendations 🎧🧡I jotted some down too!!! I second 5y
Cinfhen And not sure if you already read this one...I think you might have 5y
Cinfhen But honestly NOTHING can be as craycray as Tiger King 😱 5y
Cinfhen This was also an excellent memoir 5y

Year 2, Quarter 2 Book Riot Tailored Book Recommendations are here. I‘m pretty excited about the first two in particular, but I‘m also trying not to take personally the fact that my bibliologist has apparently changed w/o notice or explanation. Did I inadvertently insult the first one? Was I just so picky that they gave up on me? *sigh*

ImperfectCJ I really liked the recs I got the few months I did the Book Riot TBR, and I've been thinking about signing up again, but I want to figure out a way to explain it to people that doesn't result in them saying, "You mean you pay someone to tell you what to read?" 5y
DGRachel @ImperfectCJ I look at it as paying someone to help me find books I would be unlikely to find on my own, especially since I am looking for a book unicorn. 5y
ImperfectCJ @DGRachel I keep trying to think of something analogous to help my less-readerly friends and family get it, but I have trouble thinking of things people pay for that aren't book-related. Maybe like buying a customized meal plan? 5y
See All 7 Comments
DGRachel @ImperfectCJ Yes, I think that‘s a good analogy. 5y
ChasingOm I read Who is Vera Kelly last year and was surprised by how much I loved it. I don‘t remember how it got on my radar though! 😂 5y
Amandajoy I think mine come in next week. I get so excited! I like it being described as Stitch Fix for books @ImperfectCJ 5y
ImperfectCJ @Amandajoy Stitch Fix is a good comparison! Won't work on my spouse (who doesn't spend money on clothes if he can help it), but will be a good way to explain it to friends. 5y

I still need to complete these prompts for #booked2019:
-Female detective
-Indigenous author
-Muslim author or main character
-Comic or graphic novel
I have some ideas for them, but I haven‘t been able to find one for female detective that‘s not part of a series. I‘d prefer not to start another series right now. So if anyone has any suggestions for any of these, especially a non-series book for female detective, it would be greatly appreciated!

cjk One of my all-time favorite graphic novels. Be warned: it‘s a tearjerker. 😢 5y
TheSpineView For indigenes author I suggest Dark Reservations. It won several awards. 5y
Louise There‘s a book by the Polish Nobel Prize winning novelist Olga Tokarczuk, in which a female inserts herself into an investigation and tries to get people to listen to her, though she‘s not an “official”. I haven‘t read it yet, but it sounds very interesting. This might qualify as a female detective novel in the broader sense. 5y

Susanita This is about the first female Pinkerton detective 5y

-A book about a man stranded on an island with a lighthouse, fighting his demons

-Or, if that‘s too specific, just a book involving a lighthouse.

He doesn‘t want any horror or anything overly sentimental.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Susanita Two very different books involving a lighthouse: 5y

AsYouWish Eva Gates has a series called A Lighthouse Library Mystery, I haven‘t read them, but they are on my ThriftBooks wishlist. They seemed like they would be cozy mysteries. 5y

Hey all I need some help!!! Today during library one of my fourth grade girls asked me to help her find a science romance book. I looked for titles in our library that jumped out, but no luck. I turned to google, but a lot of the books that came up weren‘t science romance. Here‘s where you come in can anyone recommend any books that are science romance but also appropriate for a fourth grader to read? Thanks in advance!!

Dragon Maybe the Artemis Fowl books? 5y

LibrarianRyan I love Artie, but I‘m not sure it fits the science portion of the question. It is still one of my favorites. 5y
Dragon Thought of another sci-fi fantasy series 5y
AsYouWish Oh my stars @Dragon and @LibrarianRyan You are amazing!!!! I will give these suggestions to her on Monday and hopefully we have some in our library! I know we have The Fourteenth Goldfish, because almost all of the students have read it so far and they are all telling me I need to read it too. 5y

❌CALLING ALL LITTENS❌
✨Sooo, I‘ve been gone from the book world for a minute (9-10 months 😂) so I need to know all the latest crazes. Recommend me some new (ish) books! Anything YA, thriller, mystery, sci-fi fantasy, etc. I‘ll read anything, but romance! I‘ve heard Gideon something or other is really good?? SOS. Helppppp. 💜📚

tessavi I loved 5y
LiteraryinPA Welcome back! Awesome picture, by the way. So here‘s what‘s big lately in my opinion. Atwood‘s new book The Testaments (continuation of Handmaid‘s Tale) is the biggest, though I haven‘t read it yet. A memorable recent YA was With the Fire on High (Acevedo). I loved the drama/mystery Miracle Creek (Kim) over the summer. And The Overdue Life of Amy Byler was fun, nerdy, charming, and full of book-loving characters! Enjoy! 5y
LiteraryinPA Also Rainbow Rowell wrote a graphic novel about the fall! It‘s called Pumpkinheads and I‘ve heard it‘s light but fun. Another big one from several months ago was Where the Crawdads Sing (Owen) which I thought was outstanding. 5y
See All 16 Comments
LiteraryinPA The 2 best thrillers I read in the last few months were The Silent Patient (Michaelides) and The Wife Between Us (Hendricks, Pekkanen)- both had great twists! 5y
JennyM Welcome back. Hope all is good with you 5y
RainyDayReading Some new books that I know of that have been getting a lot of buzz but haven‘t read yet (waiting on Library holds) are My Lovely Wife- Adult thriller about a couple that kills to keep their marriage interesting, Wilder Girls- YA Horror about a quarantined girls school, Gideon the Ninth- Adult SciFi about lesbian necromancers in space, Darkdawn- Adult fantasy third in the Nevernight trilogy. I could give you a whole list but the character limit 🙄 5y
Megabooks I don‘t usually love YA, but I‘m still thinking about 5y
Ddzmini I‘ve feelin‘ and I can‘t get up 🤣🤣🤣🐱 5y
abbsinwonderland @LiteraryinLititz I still need to read Handmaids Tale, but definitely will add that one to my list! And ooooh I love Rowell. I had no idea she released anything new! 5y
BookwormAHN I've been enjoying An Ember in the Ashes series, A Gathering of Magic series and looking forward to @TheReadingMermaid & @Clwojick #Scarathlon in October 👻 5y
abbsinwonderland @RainyDayReading I‘m reading Darkdawn right now. 😍 Gideon the Ninth sounds like my kinda thing! 5y
abbsinwonderland @BookwormAHN I‘ve been wanting to read both of those series for awhile! 5y
BookDragonNotWorm Riley Sager! I just discovered him a couple months ago. His books are SO good if you like mystery/suspense! 5y
Gezemice @LiteraryinLititz I have read The Testaments. It is good but not as hefty as The Handmaid‘s Tale - more action and hope. Rainbow Rowell also will be releasing Wayward Son on Sept. 24th. 5y
hes7 Welcome back! Here‘s a new thriller that‘s gotten a lot of buzz: 5y
SconsinBookyBadger Same as @BookDragonNotWorm, I recommend Riley Sager. His 3 books are that good, and I‘m someone who occasionally reads suspense/thrillers! 5y

3/3. Finally the religion section. I wanted to get major religions in, from the Eastern faiths to atheism, which rejects religion but is involved in theological debates. If he makes it through all of 1-3‘s readings, he gets some kind of merit badge or a big box of cookies or something. 😂👏🏻

Sbk89 “A History of God “ by Karen Armstrong 5y
rwmg I would recommend this as covering more than just the Western tradition in Christianity: 5y

2/3. All of these subjects he‘s asking about are quite broad, to say the least, lol. So, I‘ve recommended to him general surveys and some of the most pivotal material in philosophy. As for history, well, that‘s huge 😆! Broad surveys it is, so he gets the entire world‘s history through ~1500, and then bits and pieces thereafter, with a focus on his own country of America, touching on many world events 1700s-2010.

#LitsyLovesLibraries

rwmg TBH I wouldn't recommend Hume: A Very Short Introduction. It's based on a series of lectures Ayer gave expounding his views on Hume rather than an introduction to Hume.
5y
MrBook @rwmg That‘s totally fine 😊, I think 10 librarians would offer 10 different lists, lol. Besides a couple of Hume‘s actual works, it was this or the Hume installment in the “in 90 Minutes” series, which is a meh series to me. 🙈 5y

1/3. Okay, so here‘s my latest Readers Advisory response. Patron is entering the university in town. Wants a basic general introduction to political theory, philosophy, history, and religion. Which books should he start with? (I also offered podcasts for him too as a bonus.) Some books we have, some we don‘t. These books assert a smattering of major political philosophies across the spectrum, from dictatorship to anarchism.

I‘m going to Delft in The Netherlands in the not so distant future, so off course I have to ask my Litsy family for bookstore recommendations. Preferably in the city center and with a great selection of books in English.

Any other recommendations are also welcome.

Amiable My youngest son spent 6 months in Delft on his study abroad in 2016! I‘ll ask him if he has any suggestions. 5y

AnneCecilie @Libby1 no, I‘ve never been there before, but from the pictures I think I‘ll love it. I‘ll be staying Friday to Sunday. It‘s with my job so there will be some group things, but we tend to get some hours on Saturday and Sunday until the flight, to use as we want. 5y
Libby1 Hello! Do you have any recommendations from your time in Delft? I‘m going next month. Thanks! 5y
AnneCecilie @Libby1 since you‘ve been there before you probably don‘t need me to tell you how charming the city is. I really enjoyed the food we had. We had burgers at Cafe De V Delft, lunch (gorgeous chicken) at Bierfabriek Delft and dinner at Van dear Dussen (I know some didn‘t enjoy the starter as much, we had something cod, but the meat was fantastic). I don‘t know anything about the prices since my employer paid it all. 5y
AnneCecilie @Libby1 We stayed at Hotel De Plataan, a charming hotel with theme rooms. So we found it funny and interesting to hear about the rooms of our colleagues. I hope this is helpful 5y

Hey everyone! I have a favor to ask of you! I have recently become obsessed with two Lifetime movies where detectives play a huge role. It could be the actor that appears in both that has caused this... but back to my favor. I would love any recommendations for detective romance books. I have read a few & love when a detective is protecting someone & of course they fall for each other. But I am open to suggestions. Thanks in advance everyone!

cathysaid I don‘t think I have any “detective romance” recs but check out CrimeReads on Facebook or crimereads.com for some possible recs. 6y
Victoriahoperose It‘s not a detective one but the Stephanie Plum series is one of my favorites. 6y
sk888888 I think the ‘In Death‘ series by J D Robb would qualify. Eve Dallas and Roarke is the romance part of the books, she‘s a Detective with the New York Police Department; the series is set in the future, but don‘t let that stop you from reading at least a couple of them. Start at the beginning (there are more than 40 in the series now!) 6y

madamereadsalot1 Heather Graham writes romantic thrillers. Her Krewe of Hunters series has supernatural elements, the FBI, and romance. 6y
AsYouWish @cathysaid oh my stars, I didn't know those existed. I will have to check them out. Thanks! 6y
AsYouWish @Victoriahoperose I will have to check it out! Thanks!! 6y
AsYouWish @sk888888 That series is on my TBR list, so I will definitely be looking into it! Thanks!!! 6y
AsYouWish @madamereadsalot1 I think I have read some of her vampire books. But I will have to look into some of her other ones! Thanks!! 6y
madamereadsalot1 She isn't my favorite, but it fits the bill maybe. 😅 There's also a series by Gemma Halliday called High Heels Mysteries that's pretty funny and I really liked them when I read them ages ago. 6y
Headinherbooks_27 @sk888888 I agree👍I was just about to suggest this too! 6y
LibrarianJen Maybe try books by Julie James? Her FBI/US Attorneys series is good. 6y
AsYouWish @LibrarianJen I love Julie James and have read all of her books. I loved them. Thanks!! 6y
AsYouWish @nu-bibliophile I am definitely going to have to give that series a try! Thanks! 6y
MonicaLoves2Read You need to try J D Robb's In Death Series 6y
AsYouWish @Monica5 I will definitely be giving it a try after all the recommendations for it! It sounds really good and with over 40 books in the series, it might keep me busy for a while. Thanks for recommending it!! 6y

I‘ll be hosting my book club‘s January meeting in just under 2 weeks. I‘ve reserved a few books (fiction), but I like to include a few nonfiction books for the group vote. I‘d appreciate any recommendations!

emilyrose_x I really enjoyed The Elephant Whisperer by Anthony Lawrence and Finding Gobi by Dion Leonard 😊 6y
Chrissyreadit What are you looking for? My thoughts go to Becoming, Uneducated, Ill be Gone In The Dark. Favorite older non fiction- The Color Of Water, Devil In The White City, A Walk In The Woods, Lab Girl. A slow burn- I‘m reading slowly- but wish I could talk about book is Braiding Sweetgrass- I could see this being a niche read but it is so well done. 6y

Lauram @Chrissyreadit Thanks! I tried to leave my question open to include as much as possible. In the past, non-fiction books that I‘ve proposed have been selected and they were really tough to get through (The Witches, White Trash), so I‘m def looking for something a little lighter, but still interesting. I‘m going to look into your recommendations. Thank you! 😁 6y
Prairiegirl_reading My two favourite NF reads this year were The 57 Bus and The Stranger In The Woods. I think they would both be good book club books because there is a lot to discuss in both. 6y

Victoriahoperose Stiff by Mary Roach is really good! I also enjoy anything Erik Larson (Dead Wake, In the Garden of Beasts, The Devil in the White City), girl, wash your face was really good. I also really liked how to get run over by a truck and too fat too slutty too loud! 6y

BethM Brene brown for sure. 6y
Cortg A Little Life is a favorite of mine. It‘s long with tons of triggers. A tough, but beautiful read. (edited) 6y
Purrsistently @Naj I haven‘t, I loved the movie but it also left me sobbing in the bathroom throwing up and I‘ve been afraid to read it😐 6y
Naj @Purrsistently So sad to hear that. Don't read it. Nothing's worth getting triggered over. 6y
Cortg I recently read a YA Nonfiction, Life Inside My Mind. It‘s full of short memoirs by various authors that either have a mental health issue or have someone close to them that does. It was really good. 6y
LegosAndPajamas “January First” is a great (and sad) story of a family‘s struggle to diagnose their young daughter, who suffers from early onset schizophrenia. “Let‘s Pretend This Never Happened” is also fantastic (and hilarious!) memoir about a woman who grew up in an unstable home and, as a result, lived a fairly unstable life. Her sequel, “Furiously Happy” is also great on sad days! (edited) 6y
Velvetfur I know this is old now but I found Prozac Nation really great so that's my recommendation...also because I haven't read much on this subject, sorry! 6y
Linsy @Insearchofbooks I second your rec for Jenny Lawson books (“Let‘s Pretend...” and “Furiously Happy”)! I suffer from anxiety and depression and these books never fail to remind me that I‘m not alone in the arena. (edited) 6y

LoverofLit @TheReadingMermaid It's a yearly challenge held by popsugar that has different topics for you to fulfill such as "a book set at sea" and "a book with a seasom in the title". A lot of fun and gets you outside of your comfort zone. 6y
BeansPage Thanks hon! Looks super fun! 6y
LoverofLit @Readergrrl I've done most of the topics, I was referring to the actual topic titled "A book recommended by someone else doing the challenge" I read just about everything! Contemporary and historical fiction, memoirs, YA, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. 6y
Readergrrl Well, some books I‘ve read lately that I really enjoyed are Shadow of the Wind, Homegoing, The Poisonwood Bible, Pachinko, White Tears... I‘ve been on a reading kick lately, but these are the titles that pop into mind. 6y
LoverofLit Thank you so much! @Readergrrl I'll definitely look those up. 6y

kristincatastrophic My 11 year old's favorite books are The Boy Who Spoke Dog by Clay Morgan, and Max and Hero both by Jennifer Li Shotz. Pretty much anything about dogs. 6y

LibrarianRyan I can probably come up with more off need be. I was trying to go for some of the less popular reads. 6y
